Hi

My blue&me failed a while ago (out of warrenty) and rather than replace it for the stupid amount of money Fiat wanted I had an after market Alpine fitted.

All the harness and steering remote is in place however the mileage is flashing constantly and neither the Fiat main dealer or my much better mechanic can stop it.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks

If you plan to do your own maintenence it would be worth investing in Multiecuscan
http://www.multiecuscan.net/
You an pick up an interface for under £20 (get a USB one)

Ah. Thanks for that - I actually have a diag box and multiecu on its way - is it straight forward - pm if you could

Quick question - Basically the factory fit header unit is removed - the blue&me unit is still in place (I believe). It basically failed during a firmware update and Perrys wanted something like 700 quid to replace it (they couldn't flash it)

Is there something that needs to be done to remove it completely from the CAN (software or physically?) I actually believe that the unit is hung and is still drawing power as If I don't drive my car for three days the battery loses too much charge to start the car. I've changed the battery and had it checked (charging fine) so I believe that the unit is still causing issues even though its not being used - If it needs to be disconnected whats the best way ?

My 500 has always drained a crazy amount of power on standby too. No doubt the B&M unit isn't helping.

I've switched to an aftermarket HU too and for the moment have left the B&M unit in place, with no errors, so you don't NEED to remove it, but it's behind the left side rear trim panel if you want to go that way;) I'll likely remove mine when I do the speaker upgrade.

What does "proxy alignment " do? or mean, could I add external temp sensor to our pop that has no readout but you can see the lcd display that's deactivated for example?

A Proxy Alignment is used to synchronize two CANBUS modules so they communicate correctly. I don't think the temp sensor is on the CANBUS, so it wouldn't need aligning - though it may connect to a module (body computer most likely) that might require alignment, if that makes sense.

If it were me, I'd remove the mirror and look for the temp sensor connector, keeping in mind you'll also have unused wiring for the heater elements, I think. If the wiring's not there, I'd give up on the project. If the wiring is there I'd use a variable resistor to test if the sensor can be made to work.

If you disconnect the Blue & Me ECU you just need to run another Proxi alignment. Who did the firmware update? if it was automatic or done by the garage either Fiat or the garage is responsible for sorting it out (fit for purpose under UK consumer law). If you did it yourself it's harder as you can't easily prove you didn't do something wrong.

If you want to play with Multiecuscan without the car or adaptor, you can. Just run the software, select your model of car and click on SIMULATE instead of connect. Note you will have to register MES to do a Proxi alignment on a 500. Load the software and make sure it connects with your interface and car before registering though.

Proxy alignment is needed usually when an ECU has been changed. It basically tells all the computers in the car to talk to each other. The flashing mileage is a symptom of that.

so you don't NEED to remove it

You might need to disconnect it if there is a fault which leaves it drawing current continuously and flattening the battery.

Annoying that the B&M module could be rendered useless just by a bad software flash. I know there is a backward compatibility problem with first & second generation Blue&Me but it's the first I've heard of a unit being permanently damaged as a result.

I don't know, but UFI's always had severe battery drain while parked (about 2 weeks to drain a battery - my Jeep will sit for six months without issue by comparison), and I had no functional issues with B&M. However, I will be putting removing the module higher on my priority list.

Watch the bolts and threads in the socket when removing the rear seat belts. I had one that I couldn't get back in. It was really really tough getting it out with a socket wrench and extension bar and it just wouldnt go back in. Nightmare.

Second that, I had one shear on me absolute pain in the ass and had to drill it and tap it again...

I believe it's a pain because the bolts go into the rear arches where they are exposed to the elements. Unfortunately I realised that after it snapped :bang: otherwise I'd have tried some WD40 etc and cleaned it up a bit first.

If the B&M module is faulty, a simple proxy alignment will try to make it communicate, but probably fail. Somewhere in the same section of MultiECUscan is the option to disable certain modules. Disable the B&M, then do a proxy alignment, and the mileage should be fixed. This just tells the main ECU to ignore the B&M. We did this successfully with a Grande Punto sometime last year, but my memory is vague as to the exact process, but should be straightforward once you get it connected.
