Plus you are learning skills, and providing useful snippets of info for the rest of us. Do you show potential buyers before and after photos? Also, any idea how much more (if anything) a repaired car costs to insure?
I'm sometimes tempted when I've seen Cat D cars for sale, but never been brave enough to buy one. I don't think you could ever part-ex one, but they look attractive if you intend to keep it till it's worth very little.

Well you pay a lower price initially so the car being worth less doesn't really matter like you I'd never buy one without pictures etc I'd like to know where repairs have been done so that I can check the standard they have been completed to.

I show pictures if asked, and if they are teetering I offer them.

It doesn't cost any more to insure one, makes no difference at all. There are a few companies that won't cover them, but vast majority do and they just want to know.

Ive seen many that have been part ex'd, as insurance you just wouldn't get as much for it.

You shouldn't be put off.

So how does the law work in the uk? If the new owner has a problem with the car related to your repairs do they have any recourse or is it caveat emptor / buyer beware once you've disclosed its a cat d?

Same as buying any car, makes no difference. Dealers must declare to buyers that it's a write off, but private sellers don't. That doesn't sit right with me and is dishonest as far as I'm concerned so I always declare it. If someone did an HPI check it would come up anyway.

It all depends on whether the vendor is classed as a trader or private seller. Traders have a legal obligation that any vehicle they sell must be 'of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose' (whatever that means) and must disclose its status if previously written off by an insurer; private sellers have no such obligation, but must still avoid misrepresenting or misdescribing the car.

There's plenty of grey area here, but in the absence of other factors, case history suggests that anyone selling more than four cars per year would likely be regarded as a trader by HMRC, Trading Standards, and the insurance companies (private car policies generally exclude liability for any use connected with the motor trade).

In practice, it's hard to get Trading Standards to take any kind of enforcement action agaist small car traders running a micro business from home, so I'd advise buyers to treat cars sold by such sellers as if they were a private sale, where caveat emptor most definitely applies.

All that said, I have a great deal of respect for typecastboy's honesty, openness and the contribution he makes to this forum.

Me too, and I'd happily dip my toe in the Cat D waters with one of his cars at the right price. Don't need another 500 at present, though!

Went to get the car MoTd today. It doesn't run out until August but I like to sell the cars with a full year. It failed the MoT as the near side front wheel wasn't round (their words). They showed me it spinning and it was definately out of true. Can't detect it driving though.

Came home ordered a good condition one with a good tyre for £59 on eBay.

That my friends is why I MoT them once repaired. It must have got damaged in the accident and I didn't even realise.

Morning folks, I thought I would share my new journey through the repair of my latest car.

For those of you who followed by blood sweat and tears of the 500 Sport that I completed recently, this is the new one I've just bought.

It's a 62 plate 1.2 Lounge with 12,000 miles. Only damage is a bent nearside wing and a damaged nearside door. It had a busted DRL too which Ive already replaced.

Took the bumper off yestereday, cleaned up the scuff marks on it with rubbing compound and it's as good as new now. Installed a new DRL and loosely put it back on the car.

I started undoing the bolts on the wing and have come across what I've never noticed before on the top of the wing under the bonnet, it's like a rectangle clip. I haven't taken a picture of it yet, but I will do, as I can't actually work out how it comes off.

I've attached the first couple of photos of the damage plus the new donor door I picked up yesterday. I'm looking for a wing at the moment, but have seen on eBay I can get one painted to the correct colour for £111 with free delivery, so may well go for that option.

So, apart from dirty seats and some bird poo and mud on the bodywork, the car is very clean. I'm going to do a video/photo diary of the removal and refitting of the wing and door as I cannot find a guide anywhere for either, so hopefully, my experience doing it will help others.

More to follow, when I get days off of work to do it.

All done, time to put it up for sale and move on to number 10.

Typecastboy, I'm pretty sure the Italian badge is fitted to the wrong side of the car, I fitted ours & it came with a template, the slope of the badge follows the bonnet & wing shut line. (sorry if this comes across as picky :)

I guess they're handed; it looks like you might have swapped them left & right. At least you've got the flag the right way round.

Unfortunately once you see it, it looks completely wrong. We've all done something like this, somewhere, sometime - I once hung two complete rolls of wallpaper, carefully trimming and pattern matching, before my mate came in and told me I'd hung it upside down :bang::bang::bang:.

Time for the heat gun? Careful with that fresh paint.

Damn it, I did wonder when I put them on. I put them on the last one like that too. They can stay on it for this one. I'll know now for next time. Appreciate you pointing it out, but I hate you now!! :D

It's ok, I don't mind you hating me as I have very slopey shoulders, in any case I can't hate you as you've saved a few 500's from being parted out .
