Hi folks
im still undecisive whether to purchase a 12 month warranty with my new (5 year old) 500
the dealer wants 295 for a 12 month policy - thats really 9 months because he has to give me 3 months with the purchase anyway
my experience in the past was that these warranties werent worth the paper they were printed on, but i was in the motor trade over 20 years ago and things may have moved on
Does anyone have any recommendations, opinions or stories to tell?

I've personally never bought a used car warranty, but buying a second hand 5 year old 500 it might prove useful lol!

Not affiliated to the following link in any way, but worth just looking at it from a quote perspective. Make sure though you check the privacy settings concerning email etc, i.e. make sure you tick/untick any boxes relating to email if you want/don't want further contact.

You could buy toward the end of your supplying garage warranty or if you are able to buy and defer for 3 months any aftermarket warranty.

All I would say is, do some research, evaluate if buying a warranty is going to be worth it for your peace of mind. There are lots of providers out there and they all offer differing levels of cover. Choose carefully.

I hope you at least paid your deposit for the car with a credit card if you have one?

Can't help specifically, but here's our story ..........

I fancied a Fiat500 and did a bit of research and wanted a TA. 105 would have been nice, but 85 would be ok. I actually knew little about the mechanics of them but I'm quite handy with a spanner and technology so wasn't worried too much. We'd never owned a Fiat before.

The deal we did with the independent car place was £8500 for the TA Lounge 2011 just out of warranty and with a brand new MOT and 13000miles on the clock, owned previously by a lady driver from the Torbay area. It was clean, immaculate, and very well appointed with extras.

The chap suggested we bought a 12m warranty on top of the normal stuff you get with a secondhand car. £250 springs to mind.

I iffed and butted about it, but jumping into a completely new world of Fiat, a modern high-tech engine with a turbo, computer controlled this and that, air bags right left and centre, filled me with a sort of worry that I may be caught out four or five - or even ten months down the line, so we bought the warranty.

As it happens, we didn't need it at all. :D The company contacted us when the year expired and asked if we wanted to renew. I declined, but was asked why. I said that I was happy with the car and as it had been completely fault-free for a year, had passed its second MOT without a hitch, I felt I'd risk it for the forseeable future.

No regrets.

Meanwhile, our daughter has bought a 500 1.2 at only 18m old, but she's opted for a deal with £20 ( I think) a month for all servicing and all defects and all labour. If the car breaks down, the company sort it. She's happy with this, and has complete peace of mind. She works, is a single parent, and doesn't need or want the hassle of a broken car.

Hope that helps,
Mick.

I'm not generally a fan..,
but as the car is fairly complex, and currently an "unknown quantity",

then a 12 month policy would be my choice - in case there are some
BIG duologic bills around the corner..,
once you've proved the car over 12 months.. then I would stick to the norm of keeping things together and take it from there,

there are a LOT of companies out there - offering a huge range of cover

just make sure the likely awkward bits are covered fully,
duologic system - actuators, clutch , etc
