Hi I'm having problems with my fiat500 every time I press the brakes it blows a fuse and the speedometer and clocks stop working and the brake lights don't work what could this be can anyone help thanks

Re: Fiat500

It might help if you gave us a few more details about your car:

What year/engine
Mileage
Last time it was serviced
It's a 1.2 2010 I think the last service was just over a year ago

Re: Fiat500

Ok, just trying to get an overall picture of the car for someone to give you the appropriate help. How many miles has this car done? You say you think the car was last serviced just over a year ago, have you just recently bought the vehicle?

You might need to hook this vehicle up to diagnostics/multiscan-ecu.

Does the dash pod flash any warnings or does the odometer continually flash?

Does the car have Stop/Start?

What sort of condtion are the pads/discs like on the front of the car?

Hi,
This is a short circuit in the brakelight circuit. Could be a faulty bulb, short in light cluster, or a short in the wiring.
Try unplugging the two rear clusters and see if fuse still blows. If it still does it's a short in the high level light or wiring. If it does not blow, plug one cluster in and try again. When the fuse blows look at the last thing you plugged back in.
Have a good look at all the wiring while doing this, look for cuts, chafing or overheating.

Thanks I'll give this ago and get back to you

This query has clearly crossed two different threads.

I wonder, would this problem be connected to chafed rear hatch wiring?
Just unplugged the 2 rear clusters put a new fuse in and its blown it again

I'm going to suggest something you may not like. It is entirely possible you could end up chasing your own tail for days or even weeks, and if your girlfriends car is in daily use, that isn't much kop.

My suggestion therefore, is to take the car to your nearest Fiat dealership and get them to run it through diagnostics. You may not want to do this because you're worried about the cost, but they might be able to diagnose the issue within minutes. You could also find a good independent auto electrician.

Many Fiat dealerships offer special rates for vehicles over three years old at reduced prices.

I don't know where you are based, but the following link is just an example:

Sorted. It's all in one place now.

That was my first thought, too.

A close inspection of the hatch wiring should be the second thing you do on any 500 with a suspected electrical problem.

The first thing you should do is disconnect the battery before you inspect it. If there is a problem with the hatch wiring, inspecting it could cause a short circuit or a stray live feed, potentially making the problem worse.

There's no point putting diagnostics on the car until you've checked the integrity of the wiring; if the wiring is faulty, diagnostics could give you a misleading result.

There have been examples on this forum of franchised dealers who've quoted for many hundreds of pounds of unnecessary work on the basis of running diagnostics on a car with faulty hatch wiring.

This post has pictures which show you what to look for.

It's an extremely common problem.

Hello,i am a little bit confused about this issue because i have many thoughts that except of hatch wiring damage anyther suspect is the brake light switch or the cabling near brake lights switch...i will replace my break light today and if the problem still exist i will check the hatch wiring also! varesecrazy

Just for your info guys, yesterday i replaced the brake light switch as i had a suspicion that the problem came from there, but NO,in the end the culprit was the knows hatch wiring loom, photos attached...
