Hello all!

I have a fiat 500 10plate 1.2

When the car is at traffic lights or at idle at any time the engine dips like its going to stall then picks its self back up a second later. It does this constantly when ever its at idle. It also seems a bit jumpy/kangaroo when driving.

Ive already changed the spark plugs and HT leads. Ive also cleaned out the throttle valve and idle air control valve.

Ive been told by a mechanic that it is probably the ignition coil pack? Do any of you guys reckon this is correct? My next option after this is paying a fiat garage to look into it which i really cant afford.

Many thanks in advance!

Simon

I'd noticed some hesitation and idling problems on mine earlier this year, also a ticking sound on the radio(08 plate) changed plugs and leads like you with no difference, then saw a coil pack come up on E-bay for £17. I thought is was worth the risk as it came from a 2013 car. The difference is very noticeable, runs smooth accelerates cleanly. I would definitely try replacing it.

Hi Simon , and welcome to FF,:)

plugs and leads are the obvious..so well done, (y)

throttle body too,

getting the ECU read for any fault codes MAY help -

BUT - it's possible something is just not set-up perfectly.. plugging in specialist kit like MultiECUScan can be good for this..,:worship:

but as a VERY cheap thing.. try disconnecting the engines battery power for a few hours - as simple as removing the black - EARTH cable.

Yeah, I'd get the coil packs checked. I had one go on a 3-pot Daihatsu and the symptoms were similar. It idled OK with an occasional hiccup but the main problem was that it would just just die if the engine was put under load or sudden acceleration was required, such as pulling into fast traffic - almost came to grief a couple of times.

Thanks for the quick response guys! Our local garage wants £54 a hour to diagnose it then parts and labour. A new coil pack brand new is £45 but ill try the battery trick first and dont know which one to go for next lol

I'd also have a good look at the plugs. If they've done more than 11k, I can pretty much guarantee they'll be this side of knackered. It's a 20 minute job to change them:

Simon, where are you. If you're anywhere near the M25 and can drive to me I'll plug your car unto MultiECUscan for free.

Hi,

My Fiat would dip from ~800 to 650 in idle.

Fixed this by replacing the water coolant temperature sensor.

Easy fix and costed around 15€ total.

Worth trying
