Hi,
My friend has a Fiat 500, and she has been complaining of a very intermittent problem where no matter how much she pushes on the accelerator, the car does not go any faster. I saw this myself yesterday, pulling onto a main road in top gear as she accelerated the revs increased but the speed stayed the same, the revs went right up to 5/6k but no effect on the speed. It was as if the car was suddenly fitted with a speed limiter.

Anyone have an idea what would cause this?

Hi,
Exact model and gearbox information would be useful, but assuming it's a manual gearbox, this is a slipping clutch. Howmany miles has the car done?

even if its an auto still can be a slipping clutch as the auto 500 has the same clutch as the manual 500!

Its a 1.2 manual 500 lounge, 70k miles

You need a new clutch. It could just be a sticking release mechanism, but by the time you have gained access to look at it you may as well change the clutch and release bearing anyway. Time and labour cost more than parts.
