Morning All

Have read numerous threads re the problems with the 500 central locking/frayed boot wires/locked boot/microswitch etc etc....

Well I've sorted the frayed wires in the rubber sock thing but my boot will still not open.

The car lights flash when I click the fob but the central locking does not work.

Is my problem failure of the microswitch in the boot handle??

I don't really want to shell out £80ish on a new boot handle if this is not the problem

Any advice is much appreciated, cheers

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum. The answers to these questions might help diagnosis.

When you say the central locking doesn't work - do you mean the doors remain locked/unlocked or is it just the boot that is inoperable?

What happens when you use the "open boot" button on the key fob?

Another question. Does the boot open when you press the boot release in the handle after unlocking the car?

Might be as simple as a blown fuse if you've had other wiring issues.

Many thanks

The doors remain locked so I'm opening the drivers door via the key slot - also the doors don't lock either via the fob

Nothing happens at all when I press the open boot button on the key fob

I've checked all the fuses and all are well

The boot doesn't open when you press the boot release in the handle after unlocking the car - I can only unlock the boot by climbing into the back of the car and flicking the latch

if the door handles aren't opening the door then I dont think the issue would be the boot microswitch. A spray of switch lube would sort the door microswitch though, worked on mine

I agree.

Another option:
https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-iii/311609-boot-mechanism-6.html

See SCORCHIO12's post no 89 on the thread above. It is for the Panda but the principle is still the same, follow the same trick to see if you can actually hear the boot switch working.

If nothing else, the above trick is free and won't cost you anything to try out:)

Sorry need to clarify - when unlocked the door handle will open the door. When the door is locked, via the key, and when pressing the open door bit of the key fob it does not unlock the door - hope that's clear?

I've tried lubing the boot handle but no success. Furthermore I do hear a slight clicking noise within the boot handle when depressing the boot release on the fob

Yes the boot wiring was tight, crimped the connectors and pushed them back in so hopefully the two ends are still in contact. I'm going to buy a second hand tailgate handle from Ebay and install that, will keep you posted - thanks for your assistance

if the doors aren't opening then it's nothing to do with the tailgate. Where are you located anyway?

Agreed that a new tailgate handle probably isn't going to sort the doors. However, if the wiring loom to the tailgate hasn't been fully repaired then it may affect the central locking operation per my post above. It's worth checking continuity of the wiring repair and eliminating this as a cause before looking elsewhere.

Hello, I'm near wonderful Leeds...

The central locking doesn't respond at all so I thought the microswitch in the tailgate handle may be causing this but I'm not sure - am I completely way off the mark?

The two thick wires in the rubber tailgate gaiter were completely severed which I have reconnected but as I said it was tight as there was no slack - are these wires to do with the central locking?

Ok thanks for this - as I posted earlier the two thick wires in the boot were completely severed which I fixed - where would I test these for continuity?

You can unlock with a manual latch? Where in the heck IS this latch?

And why yes, I am asking this two years after the post. Because Mine just shorted out, or got something stuck in it, or SOMETHING of the sort sometime between 2pm 9/17 and 2am 9/18.

Funny thing about it being well known though - FIAT still won't fix it for free. And they should.

And I still can't find the manual latch, unfortunately.
