Technical Lambda Emissions - 1st Mot

Currently reading:
Technical Lambda Emissions - 1st Mot

The lambda reading on the print out is the figure that the gas analyser works out from the gases it measures coming out of the tail pipe, it is not the lambda figure that the engine management uses.
Have you had a good look for exhaust leaks yet?
I notice that the lambda figure for the second fast idle test is incredibly close to the pass limit, typical!!

And hopefully now I can post the urn.

Hi Bill

This is the Emissions failure sheet from the Mot.

Any further advice appreciated.

Please ignore the scribbles.

Thanks

Ian
come on you serious!? you failed by 0.01 on the second test? GO for a SERIOUSLY FAST DRIVE, Italian tuning style. If you mainly drive in London then you cannot be treating the car too well start stop! Add some additives, some V power petrol, make sure oil and coolant are topped up and then drive at 70 mph between 2nd and 3rd gear (with revs at 5000 the whole time). That should do your engine wonders, and no I am not joking!

I rev my engine at the limit everyday and its fine at 100,000 kms.

Its intersting you say that my 1.9jtd 04 doblo had the front cat welded up by this fantastic mechanic in Morley, it was only 40 quid and I think thats v good ss new one v exp and only available from fiat. MOT in rew weeks so am bit nervous!.

Oh and whilse im on for diesel owners MILLERS DIESEL POWER is brilliant stuff does wonders for engine & mpg.

ok - thanks chaps.

I've got a day off tomorrow so I will:-

1) add some additives
2) do a few junctions of the M25 at high revs
3) go straight back with a hot car for my free retest

If it fails, I will ask him to look for an exhaust leak (on the ramps).

And if that fails, I will go to Bosch (see the beginning of the thread) where I think I will have half a chance of getting a proper diagnosis and MOT pass!!

Thanks for all your advice

Cheers

Sounds like a plan.
Best of luck.
Do let us know how you get on

Ok. So what actually happened?

You're not going to believe this, chaps.

I called the mot place to book the car in for its retest and the fella said he was glad I phoned and that I should come straight round. Apparently the emissions machine calibrators were in yesterday and found the readings were borderline. On closer examination they found a pinprick hole in the rubber tube.

Doh!!!

The fella asked him if he had many cars failing lately and he said he'd had more than usual.

Anyway, my car went back in fairly cold, with no additives and no motorway run, and it sailed through by miles. Not even close.

So, thanks to all for your contributions to this thread. I've definitely learnt a few things which I'm sure will be useful in the future.

This time, though, the explanation was much much simpler!!

Cheers

Ian

Actually it's the most believable explanation of all those offered in this thread - the 500 is not known for failing MOT's due to emissions faults.

Some dodgy garages offer cut price MOT's and then use an out-of limits emissions reading as an excuse to generate unnecessary work, though there's no reason to suppose that's happened in this case. I discounted that explanation once you'd posted that they'd tried multiple times to get it through.

Out of interest, what did the testing garage offer you as a goodwill gesture in compansation for all the hassle they've caused you?

Well we were sort of correct when several posters suggested an air leak.
Just that no one guessed that the hole was in the garage's equipment:)
It worked out in the end and garage was at least honest enough to tell you.
