Technical 500 twin air solenoid failure

Technical 500 twin air solenoid failure

Shop4Parts has had the unit for sale for 5 years now.

And the rest - it's over six years since I posted that! I see that the price has gone up a bit since then.

Over that time, we've seen a small but regular number of posts from folks who've had these fail. If there had been more failures, I'd have expected to see a market develop in reconditioned actuators, but that hasn't happened yet.

These engines need fresh C2 or C3 spec oil at least every 9-10000miles not the 18000miles that is specified and the multi air oil strainer needs cleaning regularly.

I'd agree. And it's one of the very few cars where I'd actually want to use Selenia oil, rather than a same specification equivalent. The value actuating logic uses a highly accurate temperature sensor to determine oil viscosity in real time, and if the temperature/viscosity profile of the oil doesn't match what it's expecting, it won't work properly. There's no guarantee that oils of the same specification will necessarily have the same profile - and we've had reports of rough running that have been sorted by an oil change to Selenia.

The recommended viscosity spec is different depending on the year of manufacture; what nobody has yet clarified is if there is a corresponding difference in the programming.

Its a great performing engine - but that is crazy really.

Mine lived on a diet of Castrol Edge Titanium changed every 6000miles and it ran perfectly.

The Alfa Fiat specialist that the car used to go to, stated that if the oil wasn´t
changed at least every 10000miles, by 50000miles the timing chain would be stretched and the multiair unit gummed up.
