For some reason I can't see 100HP 500s achieving classic status though, unlike the Panda 100HP which could well become sought after future cheap classic.

No, me neither - I think ten years from now, folks will be breaking up 1.4 500's to keep 100HP Pandas on the road.

Within the 500 range, the NA 1.4 occupies a relatively lowly place (sorry Ahmett). I'd say it's the esoteric A500SS variants which have the best chance of making it into a long retirement, whereas the 100HP sits at the top of its branch of the Panda family tree and its place in history is firmly reserved.

I agree, the 100hp Panda is definitely one to keep. I do fancy one as a future cheap classic.
But then I also fancy a 4x4 Panda. Not just as a run around but as a cheap overland expedition vehicle:eek:they are giant killer's and share the same genes as my Mercedes-Benz GWagen.

This is all a little weird from someone who had until 2 years ago my only experience of Italian cars was a dog of a diesel Punto:)

I think this is because Fiat decided to offer the engine across the spec range rather than keeping it exclusively to a Sport version inspired by the Panda 100HP (the Abarth 500 put paid to that I guess). Plenty of 500 Pops out there with the 1.4 100HP and 6-speed box. The arrival of the TA then eclipsed the old school NA, pushing the 1.4 to the background.

It's a great engine/manual gearbox combo though, and regularly gives me a laugh when conditions allow. Mine might become my own personal classic if it remains as trouble-free as it has since 2008.

should be fine i think its the most reliable engine in the fiat range assuming you maintain it as told and i am sure it will last much longer than all of the stupid electronics of the car = )

Fiat haven't shown any inclination towards replacing the 500 just yet. Stop reading Auto Express :) I think the 500 will be here in current form for at least a good 2-3 years at least.

Here it's reported that they're preparing a facelift for the current car for launch later this year. Likely to involve minor changes to the exterior but the addition of UConnect from the bigger 500L on the inside. I doubt they'd be doing this if they were planning to launch a completely new 500 a year later.

I reckon they'll be (quite rightly) focussing on a Punto replacement before worrying about the 500, which is generally selling very well for its age.
