Technical Warning for Marelli Twinair tuning box users.

I can't select map 1, because I'm not using the module on my current 500. Unfortunately Magneti Marelli didn't make a map for the TwinAir 80 with engine code 312A5000 that is in my 500. For some time I considered using the map of the TwinAir 85, but I'm not brave enough to do that.

However, I did use the module on my previous 500 with a TwinAir 85. Then I didn't notice any 'sobbing', but I used BP Ultimate, which has an octane rating of 98* in the Netherlands. Unlike Shell, BP doesn't do suspicious about the octane rating. In fact they use it as a selling point. On their website BP even explains what engine knock is and how BP Ultimate influences that. Maybe I'm naive, but BP's openness gives me more confidence than Shell's mysteriousness.

*) According to BP's UK website BP Ultimate has an octane rating of 97 in the UK.

This worldwide 'sobbing' summary might help us further:
  • The Twins notices 'sobbing' when the engine is really hot or after frequently switching maps with the remote control. He uses English Shell V-Power Nitro+.
  • DaMoeKri noticed 'sobbing' when using Danish Shell FuelSave, but he doesn't when using Danish Shell V-Power.
  • Corsasri noticed 'sobbing' with his wife's car, but he doesn't with his own. English regular unleaded fuel is used in both cars.
  • AGH1965 didn't notice 'sobbing' when using Dutch BP Ultimate.
  • UFI notices 'sobbing' even without having a MM module. Does he perhaps use Australian unleaded fuel with octane rating 91???
Potential causes distinguished so far:
  • Heat
  • Fuel
  • Map switching
Did I miss something?

Guys try using regular unleaded fuel. See if you still have the sobbing.

I'm curious if the sobbing still occurs if map 1 is selected.

I get the sobbing without the MM box and with 95RON. I sometimes run 98 (V-Power) so I will do that next tank and see if it helps. If not I'll try BP Ultimate and if that fails look at an octane booster.

I would agree that ambient and or engine temps could well be part of it.

All this talk of fuel makes me wonder if it's ethanol-related.

Ethanol content isn't necessarily consistent even between different batches of the same fuel, and manufacturers aren't exactly forthcoming when it comes to disclosure.

It's a nightmare for owners of classic cars and those aircraft which can run on E0 mogas.

There's no ethanol in our 95-98 octane fuels. In fact, here in my state ethanol fuels are pretty hard to find. Some service stations tried E fuels and bio-diesel but have mostly gone back to pure dino juice.

Has anyone downloaded the 'XXX' software recently? Did it work okay?

I am fast losing confidence in MM. I opened an account with me100t.com and pfaffed around trying to get it all to work on my Mac. By then, my account was blocked. So I used another email and opened another account. I had an old Windows laptop, dusted it off and used that. All was well the first 3-4 times I went in and tried loading up the XXX software (although it didn't make my car run any better with the ME111T).

Now that account has been blocked! Bloomin' useless!

Yes I used the xxx map. But MM Did say it would only be up for 48 hours. So thinking MM load problem maps for various customers this way. So the map there now maybe for any vehicle.

True. But as my car ran exactly the same before and after I loaded the XXX map makes me think that there's a more significant problem than just the map.

Anyway, I've emailed MM at me100T.com (its 'support at', right? I can't get into the programme to check...) outlining the problem but given how slack they've been with you guys, I'm not holding my breath on getting a quick reply.

Just wanted to say.
Dualogic gearboxes in the Fiat 500 are produced by Magnetti Marelli so you can imagine how much confindence I have in them.

The semi auto which is similar in the Smart, I feel is a much better and safer system and is produced by Getrag = )

By the way I had emailed Magnetti Marelli when my 'box and they replied saying sorry and asking more details. I gave them but then they abandoned me = ) Nothing special there!

MM have blocked my account and no replies to numerous emails. This is really terrible service considering there's an issue with their product / software.

Apparently these accounts are not meant for customers. See post of forum member AusPanda below:
I called the tech support number in Italy just now, and spoke to a guy who spoke quite good English.
...
He said that the accounts were blocked because the restricted area of the website is for workshops or those who've done Magneti Marelli training courses only.
I guess we have to deal with our suppliers then.
