Hi

I have a 500cGQ. I'd quite like to get a sat nav (never had sat nav before) and hear the TomTom2 is the pick.

Thing is, in the reviews they reference a specific space/slot that this goes in to on 'your Fiat 500' and there are images of the unit being docked on the dash.

I don't appear to have this specific space. Am I missing something? If not, what options do I have? Sat nav suckered to the dash with a wire dangling to the USB port?

Thanks for any advice

The dock for the unit that fits into the dash top is a factory fit so has to be ordered with the vehicle when new. I don't belive there is any way you can retrofit it.

We had a 500 and used a good quality Garmin dash disk on the dash top. The cable can quite easily be tidied up but yes it's not a properly integrated system. We do the same now in our 500L. The wire goes to the 12v socket not the USB port on ours. This is the install in ours 500L.

I wouldn't recomend Garmin Sat Navs though, our Nuvi can be a PITA. When I change I wil be going the TomTom route (no pun intended).

When we got a TomTom for the partner's 500C we faced the same dilemma. The unit is suckered to top of the windscreen near the mirror and in the confined space the wire kept getting snagged and was generally an eyesore. The solution was to add a 2m USB extension cord which runs around the windscreen tucked into the trim then under the dash to the centre console. Not an ideal solution perhaps but it didn't require any drilling and the wire's totally invisible.

The Garmin (I have the top one currently, but have had others) are way ahead of the 500's TomTom 2 in my experience. The voice command lets me get to most places without touching the unit at all. It's still cheaper than a Fiat TomTom 2 off eBay. No electronic device is 100% perfect, partly because one man's bug is another's feature.

Unfortunately my Garmin has an annoying habit of freezing mid journey (not very useful when you are doing 110 kph in the outside lane of a French AutoRoute) and sometimes it 'forgets' to calculate the 'distance to go' and display the speed I am actually travelling at.

I find it calls out the turns far too early meaning if you don't check and double check the screen (averting your eyes at possibly a bad moment) you often get caught out by taking the turn before the one you should have.

I also couldn't work out why if I took a wrong turn it would sometimes try to take me on some mystery tour to get me back on route rather than just flip back around (which I normally did anyway when it was safe) - I then discovered it has the 'allow U turns' set to 'No' by default.

I used to have a NavMan which was much better in comparison IMHO.

I honestly cant say if a TomTom is/would be any better but I think I will be trying one rather than another Garmin TBH.

I have a TomTom Go 6000, which is one of their new units, and it's marvellous. Huge screen (but there is a smaller version), but more importantly the routing is incredibly fast, it never hitches/freezes and doesn't lag behind what the car is doing on roundabouts. Massive improvement over my previous TomTom 950 and GO!XL.

Obviously comes with all the normal TomTom stuff, like IQ routes, and even has a free lifetime map update subscription and live traffic.

The mount sits on the dash, with the TomTom beanbag holding it firmly in place. My only problem is the wire, which has a fudge of going down to the 'glovebox' where there's a little groove it fits in to stop it rattling, then in to the 12V port via a USB adapter that came with it. I'd love to wire it in better, but oh well.
