Went to start my '58' reg 1.4 today, after about 2-weeks standing, only to find no starter operative - I assumed (rather surprising) weakness of [original] battery, so attached jump leads and then cranked it into life.

I then took it out for a 'charge up' drive but immediately noticed a warning light for ' Car protection system failure' - I drove on, noticing slight stuttering in power, then got another warning light 'Electric power steerinf failure', with rev counter fluctuating.

Turned for home & parked it!!

Later.... no lights at all, when ignition key turned on - a few minutes later, usual lights showed but went off, when I moved key into start position.

Any ideas, please?

Your battery has most likely reached the end of its life; not that surprising if it's the original on a '58 plate car. EPS warnings are often a symptom of impending battery failure.

Hopefully replacing your battery with a new one of the correct specification should provide a cure to all the problems you are reporting.

It's also possible you have a bad earth connection, but given the age of your car, my money would be on the battery.

Thanks for prompt diagnosis - my local garage said "battery" as well, so hope that is indeed the cause!

(These modern cars - the flashing lights just serve to confuse, I reckon!)

My plan is to jump-start again on Thursday, cautiously drive to garage and get new battery - I will let you know if that fixes it!

Eureka! Yes, bought & installed new battery and all is well - no nasty warning lights, perfect start, all back to normal!

Talking with garage, they do say that batteries are ever more a major part in functionality (eg electric steering) so heavy demands on them all the time and they do now tend to 'fall off a cliff', rather than deteriorating noticeably over a longer period.

Anyway, no biggie really, just £50 and all is well !

(interesting that new battery is physically rather smaller than the Exide that was O.E. - definitely right tho & a 3-year guarantee so what the hey!!)

Just be thankful you've not got a S/S model.

Batteries for S/S 500's typically last about half as long, and cost twice the price (n).

Someone on here was quoted almost £250 by a main dealer for a replacement battery .

Which as we know, is stupid money because the correct type of replacement battery can be bought for half that price.
Edit: Lol! I just looked at your link jk.....silly billy me!
