Hi guys,

Just a quick regarding the interior light in my 500.

So with light works fine when physically clicked to the left side, but when it's left in the middle position the automatic function will not work, eg. When the doors are opened the light won't switch on...

I've checked the fuse box in the passenger foot well and all is good, does anyone know where the problem might be coming from?

Thanks,
Cam

Does the dash display light up briefly with odometer and time/date when a door is opened and/or does it display a warning when the engine is started with a door open? If it does so with both doors then the fault is likely in the light unit itself. It obviously has power and earth so the problem may be in the mechanism, If you prise it out you can check the operation and possibly see where it's not connecting.

If there's nothing there then it may be the timer/dimmer circuit, and I expect that would need a trip to the dealer.

If the dimmer circuit is at fault then it's a new body computer

There aren't any electronics in the light unit.

That's what I meant. The light assembly itself is very basic. I dismantled mine a while ago to fit an LED alternative and it didn't work at first when I replaced it but that was because I hadn't quite snapped it together properly.

Thanks for all the info guys, really appreciated.

So I've checked the input wires to the light with a multimeter, connecting the -'ive black cable to the -'ive side of the mulitmeter and the +'ive side to first the 12V constant power cable and then the switched cable which should go live when a door is opened; I got no power to the light whatever combination I tried including locking and relocking the car, closing both doors and opening etc...

does this mean it is the computer?

thanks so much

Yeah the display does briefly light up, if it does happen to be the body computer do you happen to know the cost of such a repair; could the install be done myself too or will the car have to be sent back to a dealership garage?

Thanks

Speaking for myself, if the car's not in warranty and as long as everything else is working, I'd just settle for doing without the light if can still switch it on if you need it. In point of fact I've always left my interior light/s switched off and use them manually only when necessary - but (I stress) that's just me.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I have no idea of the cost of a new computer but if parts prices over there are anything like here it'll be pretty frightening. I think the best option would be to take the car in and ask them to check what's wrong and quote to repair - there might yet be a simple solution.

Best of luck either way.

Ahah, ok then, thanks for the advice, I'll take the car in soon and keep you updated ;)

Cheers guys

Hi,

did you solve the issue?

I have exactly the same issue after fitting the fiat genuine 500 led light.

Thanks
