Hello ,

I was hoping that I might get some help, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum or has been covered before but I'm still learning!

My 500 has unfortunately been hit by one of the Neighbours on the rear wheel arch passenger side it has damaged my paintwork quiet badly but has also pushed my bumper inwards slightly and there is a small dint in the panel above my bumper, my car is only 3 months old so as you can imagine I'm really upset about it :(

I have been told by the garage it's going to (stoneacre) that although my bumper is damaged because there is no crack in it that they will just 'remould' it rather then replace it.

I'm really worried that is won't come back looking like new, and that the paintwork will not match or will be noticeable where that part has been re sprayed.

I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has had their 500 fixed for a similar issue that could put my mind at ease please and Thank-you in advance :)

If they were to replace the bumper with a new one then then new bumper would be supplied by Fiat unpainted so the body shop would have to paint it anyway.

There is no reason why any decent body shop should not be able to get proper exact paint match on both the metal work and bumper, and have a perfect panel finish. If they do the job right then you should have no fears/worries.

I suggest that when you go to collect the car take another "critical" person with you. Critical or otherwise two or more pairs of eyes are better than one, especially as you will be naturally keen to get your baby back.

I would also check that all the bumper fixing bolts etc. are all present as well. Again there is no reason why they should not be but it is worth checking (if you or the other pair of eyes know how to).

DO NOT ACCEPT or take the car away unless you are happy with. Even the slightest niggle should be tackled there and then.

God, I'd be gutted as I guess you are. I trust you have stuffed cat **** through their letterbox. As above really, have a good look when you pick it up. I used to work in a bodyshop (worst 3 years of my life!) some colours are better than others to match - hope it's not silver!

No it's not sliver it the volare blue (baby blue) fingers crossed that's easy to match

I will give it a really good look over I'm hoping to get one of my friends up that is quiet handy with cars to come with me I really am gutted about it but thank-you for all your advice I will defiantly take it on board I will have to learn where those bolts are! Thanks again :)

Indeed. Broom Yellow I believe is notoriously difficult to match and have personal experience from our Broom Yellow Coupe! Also others like shades of silver as mentioned.

The key point here is that the body shop will mix to a paint code. All paint makes have these codes but there is never a guaranteed match. Skilled painter will mix to code, test spray, examine, mix deviate, test spray, and so on till as near a perfect match is obtained. The quality of the body shop will be determined not only by the body work/panel work but also by attention to the possibly required iterative paint cycles to get the perfect match.

Those that can not and do not meet what is expected should be named and shamed!

Meanwhile, I'm hoping Stoneacre get Megan's 500 picture perfect 1st time around so Megan can resume her life and love of driving her pride and joy.

:yeahthat:

And make sure you inspect the whole car - not just the parts that were repaired.

Agree with all that has been said. Quality panel shops should be able to match the paint and entire panels are sprayed and blended into the rest of the bodywork . A silver car I had a few years ago had a similar ding, panel shop did a great job gently blending the paint across the whole side of the car.

I'm assuming this work is being done on insurance? Why don't you ask exactly where is the car going to be repaired?

A few years ago, I had a car that had some major body panel replacement carried out under warranty but as the supplying dealership didn't have body shop facilities on site, the car was farmed out to a local accident repair specialist approved by the manufacturer to carry out the work. I had to pick the car up from the body shop that did the work. I was there for nearly an hour inspecting every panel and looking at the colour match both inside the workshop and outside, in the shade and in the sun too. The bloke thought I was a right pain in the backside!

As has been suggested, take someone else along when you eventually pick the car up and as jrkitching also pointed out, inspect all of the car both before it goes in to the workshop and when it comes out. If necessary, take lots of before and after photos with a time/date stamp camera, or if you have a hand cam, shoot some video.
