Technical Throttle Position Sensor - Replacing

Morning all,

I don't have the jobsheet to hand, but the car went into the garage who checked out the wiring and throttle position sensor - the sensor has now been changed. Cost £170 for the part and labour which I think is reasonable.

Car has been working fine the past few days, I'm hoping that will be the lot now but I am not going to discount it cocking up again based on what typecastboy said!:)

Hi, first sorry for my english im french...

i have change the body of the trottle, the maf sensor and get the fault...

There are two things to try. I tried both. Replace the entire throttle pedal which is fly by wire and includes the sensor and change the throttle body which is the part that contains the butterfly valve where the airbox sits. I did both but neither made a difference. I ended up with the car in a workshop and it was found to be a slight voltage error in the body ECU. I bought a used one on eBay for about £60 and had to spend £150 having it reset/virginised. That did the trick. The incorrect voltage fooled the main ECU into thinking it was the throttle position sensor.

Hi,
Page 3 of what?
To further confirm the fault is the pedal sensor use MES with engine stopped and on the parameters tab tick the boxes for Throttle position %, Throttle position track 1, and Throttle position track 2. As you press the pedal slowly they should move together (the tracks may be different values but should change together). I suspect from your description that one track will suddenly jump near full throttle. It does not sound like an ECU fault.

Hi everyone,

We now have the invoice back from the garage and in fact it was the entire throttle pedal that was changed, not just the sensor.

So they read the code, replaced the pedal and tested it out. It was 1.5 hours labour in total for the part replacement and fault reading/testing.

The car has been working fine since, it seems that although the error code is the same maybe the precise problem is not quite identical.

As always, I hope this will be the end of the problems now!:)

Hello folks, All this info has been really helpful.

I have a Fiat 500 pop turbo

One day after driving low and high speeds I took off from a light and it went into "gimp mod". At that time the only code showing was P160A

I then cleaned the throttle body and was recommended to add in some fuel treatment. I was able to drive the car for 10 miles through stop and go traffic before it went into "gimp mod" so just cleaning the body didn't help.. Then I took the body totally off and cleaned the butterfly and body. This time it threw codes P160A, P0222 and P0123

I ordered a reconditioned throttle body and just swapped that out. I started the car up and it went into "gimp mod" in seconds throwing those same three codes. I cleared them and let the car sit for a bit. Second time I started the car it sat idling for 15 min before it threw the same three codes.

I am about to lose it. I am not as healthy as I once was and working on this car between chemo treatment has been a task in hand. I have a new Euro shop in town I am thinking about going to go and talk to them. I just want to make sure they have someone savvy with Fiat and I am not just dumping money into labor I have already done.
