Hi all!

I'm new to this forum and need your help!

I have a Fiat 500 1.2 Pop. We bought a backbox from a supplier from ebay which was fitted by a garage but didn't fit properly. It kept knocking on the suspension arm.

I then forked out even more from another supplier to buy a higher spec exhaust backbox (thinking it was because it was a cheap, nasty part) which the description assured me it was a perfect fit and yet again I have the same problem! The mechanic has tried to bend the pipe so it doesn't knock but hasn't been able to solve the suspension arm problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem and how did you resolve it? I've so far wasted around £150 on two exhausts and two lots of labour charge! My husband managed to get the exhaust up on the higher of the two brackets which solved the suspension arm problem but now the pipe knocks against the metalwork underneath.

We are both at our wits end as well as being skint. Am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy a genuine FIAT part??

Any help appreciated

First of all start a claim with ebay for not as described and get your money back.

I'd get one made in Stainless steel. It'll be dearer than the cheapo' eBay jobbies but probably no more than a Fiat one.

Genuine Fiat one will fit properly... the stainless one will be made so it fits properly.

The aftermarket ones tend to do this (The Younger Mrs S. has a Cinquecento with the same issues.. and that's a good brand .. OMP.. job).

I've just had a custom made stainless one, only cost £250. (ETS in Derby)

It really was worth the money. I left it with them for the day and it was built to fit the car. I was also able to spec what sound I wanted and the style of tail pipe.

I went for a twin 2" shotgun type tail pipe that fits really nicely into the oval cut-out in the rear bumper.
Sound wise I have a nice rumble on tick over a crisp note on take off and by 2500 RPM its silent. Its actually quieter at 60 that the original was courtesy of having the silencer box under the middle if the car.

lifetime guarantee too.

Highly recommended.:D

Have you got an address or phone number for them please ? Ta

Actually must drop by again sometime soon. Because the Exhausts last forever they ask that you take the car back once in a while to have the rubbers checked as normally rotten rubbers would be found and changed when you'd change the exhaust. No point in having a system that'll last a long time if the rubbers fail and it gets damaged. The check is free and I would imagine if they have to change one sometime it wouldn't break the bank.

I took my 1.2 lounge to my Fiat dealer to fit a new back box. Unknown to me, until now, instead of fitting a Fiat part, they fitted another. This proceeded to bang as described elsewhere and 4 ( yes really) return visits later, they claim it is now fixed. We'll see. Today was the first time they admitted it was a non-Fiat part.
My advice to anyone planning a replacement back box is to insist on a Fiat part. As for Fiat, this experience falls far short of what any customer should reasonably expect.

It's all down to ££££.

The OEM Fiat backbox is a silly price.

You can buy an aftermarket replacement for much less money.

How much did you pay, and does your replacement back box have the chrome tip of the original?

The quality of both OEM and aftermarket mild steel backboxes is much the same; rubbish. Anyone planning on keeping the car a long time might do better to source a stainless replacement.

Had it been free of charge it would have been too expensive! The aftermarket version clearly doesn't fit properly.

There's more than one manufacturer of aftermarket backboxes. I doubt they're all rubbish.

What's also possible is that they used an aftermarket exhaust for a Panda, or even a Ka - they're similar, but the aftermarket part numbers are different.

I'd have expected a Fiat dealer to know all this.

That's a perfectly reasonable expectation; but judging by what sometimes gets posted here, perhaps not a very realistic one.

I'm slightly surprised that a Fiat dealer would use aftermarket parts; in any event, aftermarket factors are notorious for sending out the wrong bits.

That's completely ****e. Report them to Fiat UK. I'd expect a Fiat dealer to only fit genuine parts.

What quote did they give you (i.e. were they gonna charge you a genuine parts price and fit a cheapo variant)? That would have been fraudulant trading.

And.. if you had a warranty issue and took it to another dealer... what would they say when they saw it was a cheapo' pattern part exhaust...?

I just received an apologetic phone call and offer of modest compensation from the Fiat dealer. They hadn't given me a choice of replacement, but, on the other hand, they didn't charge me for the more expensive Fiat version. In conclusion, there does seem to be an issue with the fit of at least one type of aftermarket back box which people should be aware of. I also agree that given the short lifetime of the mild steel version, stainless is probably the way to go. Thanks for the contributions, folks.
