Sorry for the late reply guys. Life kind of took over yesterday and I couldn't get back to you.
I'm still unsure of what the protruding metal piece is however there have been modifications to the car in the past as I found this in the passenger side footwell:

Looks like the car had dual controls!
Not too worried about it being a learner car as it is an auto and the warranty cover on it is really good, although i'm a little peeved that the dealership didn't let my mum know when she purchased it!

I disagree, where would we stop - have every name monitored just in case it upsets someone.
By putting that user on your ignore list, then you won't be able to read their username.
