I've had my 500C since November and it's just clocked 3,000. At last, the performance is starting to improve and also the fuel consumption, just hitting an average of 45.5 over the distance.
I'm now getting used to it and particularly enjoying its manoeuvrability, its smooth 1.2 engine, and the the folding roof.
Not so good are the extremely stiff action on the seat backrest release, and the dreadful radio reception, presumably due to the aerial being built-in to the windscreen.
However, over the past two weeks, I've noticed that the Start/stop isn't coming in. I would have thought that, in this warmer weather when all of the electrics aren't running (no AC yet), then it would function almost all of the time?
Should I be going back to the dealer, or is the SS a law unto itself?

Glad your enjoying it.

There are many factors that determine if the s/s will work or not. I think that you have to have traveled a fair distance for the battery to have a good amount of charge in it, and non of any other functions on that could drain the battery.

If I park mine for about 48hrs, it takes about 80km for the battery to recharge sufficently for S/S to work. I currently have a charger permanently connected and S/S works 100%.

I'd suggest that you need to drive at least 10km DAILY to keep the battery topped up, if you stay home at all the charge will soon drop. Weather (lights and wipers) doesn't have a major impact as the alt just puts out more current when they're on. It can't however put more current into the battery than the battery is able to accept.

yeah I'd go with not enough juice in the battery as well, all stop\start systems like to have a fully charged battery to work so the car doesn't leave you stranded with a dead one!

Hi all. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, it is now worrying me even more! At the weekend I did about 400 miles driving to York and back, which should have ensured a well charged battery, but still no SS.
I'll give the dealer a call and maybe get it checked out.

Weirdly I'm currently having problems with my start/stop it just stops, switches off by itself?

My fiat's 4 years old and just on 29,000 miles

During the journey (with s/s on) I just get the warning triangle and the s/s symbol on the dashboard

Not had my car a week yet so might go back to the dealer?

A car isn't designed to, and normally wont recharge a battery which has at some point been in a deeper than normal state of discharge.

Charge it over night with a pulse charger and it'll probably be ok. If not the battery could be failing.

We have had our 500 sport from new and I agree with the term " start and stop sometimes" which is certainly the case with ours

I only drive my car once a week and mostly short distances in the suburbs, so I bet my battery is shot. I always have start/stop turned off; I'm sure it wouldn't have enough juice to operate anyway.

What's a good car battery charger or tester unit? I don't trust the ones you can get at Supercheap Auto...

If you just want a test, any place that sells batteries should offer free testing. Make them show you the CCA read out so you know they're being honest.

hi all I'm a new boy and 500 is my wifes car with same prob battery is fully charged andall linked items checked ie rear screen heaters and other safety features .my conclusion is now the clutch switch because the prob is intermittent I'm told it works the same way as brake switch will let you know in due course

sounds like you need a new battery. my oem battery lasted 1.5 years!

my wifes 500 goes in today, and they say they can fix it ,I doubt it.i think it will go on computer and they will clear codes, and work ok for about 3 months.fiat have been contacted ,and are working on this ,but as yet have no solution.i think there will be recalls in the future.

My S/S battery just died, 1.5 years from delivery, 2 years from manufacture of the car. Lasted all of 5700km.

Funny as my Jeep battery is now nine years old and has been rather neglected for it's life.

I'm sorry to hear that, but not overly surprised.

It only takes one deep discharge incident prior to delivery to sow the seed for this kind of premature failure.

Agree with the points made.

Our TA start/stop is crap too. Wife did a 100 mile round trip the other day and when sat at lights, the S/S will operate for about 20 seconds maximum. It's actually been like this for ages. I've had the battery on the CTEK charger a couple of times and although the battery gets the top up it requires, the S/S will still only operate for 20 or so seconds and then the engine comes back on again. Our previous POP was never like this, the S/S would operate and the engine wouldn't restart until the clutch had been dipped.

I have a sneaking suspicion that because our 'new pre-reg' TA had been sat around for a considerable period of time before actual sale, the battery has suffered premature failure of some sorts. When the car goes in for its first service, I will point it out to the Fiat dealer and press them for a replacement battery under warranty.
