Hi all,

With my lounge came this great big thatcham steering wheel lock, yeah its a great deterrent but do I really need to use it?

Its leaving small black marks in white wheel and its scratched middle badge slightly,

And I just think it may be a pointless item cause the car is probably hard to steal anyway,

Your thoughts please,

Cheers,

Lee.

We also have one of those large full cover wheel locks but only ever use it if we go away and leave the car for any length of time (even when leaving at self park airport car parks). To be honest, it'd be easier removing the fuel pump fuse lol! They won't get very far with that removed.

To be honest, if someone wants your car, they'll have it. There have been one or two stories told on this forum of people having their 500 nicked. I believe someone even had their car lifted by a crane onto the back of a truck in the middle of the night. Many cars are now nicked by burglars entering the house and nicking the key because they can't get them started without one. You'd be amazed at just how many people stupidly leave their car keys downstairs at night making easy pickings. I even know people that have their car keys on the same bunch as their door keys, which of course they leave in the door at night when they go to bed!

Thanks for the reply, I guess its a case of personal preference whether I use it then, but am I right in saying they can't knick the car conventionally without the key?

Thanks,

Lee.

Virtually all late model cars have engine immobilisers built- in making it difficult but not impossible to steal. Years ago I used a 'crook lock' on my steering, but it was a hassle. Those locks can be broken too. After all why do you have insurance ? Forget the steering lock.

There are pros who can steal virtually any car without access to the key, but the pros are usually after bigger fish.

For peace of mind, get insurance, and don't hang your car keys where a thief can easily get to them -- best to keep them on your body or close by at all times.

Some people actually leave their car keys at home when they catch public transport to work! :bang:

If a thief wants your keys and those keys are on you then they tend to be impolite when they ask for them.....
