I bought my 11 plate 500 from a non-Fiat dealer in January. With the dry sunny weather I noticed the paint is peeling off the trim between the sunroof and windscreen.

I went back to the dealer I bought it from and they said it's a manufacturing defect and I'll have to take it up with Fiat (the car isn't 3 years old until July). I went to my local Fiat dealer and they said a) it's not paint, it's a plastic coating so not covered by the paintwork warranty and b) it's the problem of the dealer who sold it anyway.

The selling dealer maintain it's Fiat's problem but referred me to a Fiat franchise in the group who sent me to their nominated bodyshop. The estimator at the bodyshop said, in his opinion, it was blatantly a manufacturing defect but it was up to Fiat to decide if they would take the claim.

I haven't received the estimate yet but I looked through the parts catalogue and I'm pretty sure the trim is part of the sunroof frame, which would cost £1000+ to replace...

Since that's very unlikely to be approved, my questions are - has this defect happened to anyone else and can anyone recommend the best way to repair it without spending a fortune?

Presumably it can either be stripped and painted (by a professional) or could it have some kind of vinyl applied?

Thanks
Ian

Hmmm I've just checked mine (it's a 10 plate) and it's fine though there is a nasty chip in it!
I would say speak to Fiat if the dealer doesn't want to know but if no joy I'd get it vinyl wrapped, would be much cheaper and less mess (no over spray, guaranteed finish etc).

That was my thinking as well, wasn't sure if the shops that do vinyl wrapping would be interested in such a small job but it would be worth asking :)

I'm going to get the rear of my roof wrapped to match the Skydome and that strip, as it seems the strip can be a problem I think I'll get the strip done as well, there's plenty of wrapping places, someone will want your money, just call a few.

Hi Ian,

Sounds like you are being pushed around by all the different parties involved here - no surprise though as I'm sure no-one really wants to take the blame...

I have no advice to offer from a technical perspective. However, I think it would be handy if you could approach the guy at the bodyshop and ask him to kindly put his comments in writing for you.

If you have something in writing from a professional who states that he believes it is a manufacturing defect (and who is also working for a Fiat approved bodyshop), then you may well have some luck getting Fiat to sort it under warranty.

Wish you all the best though.
