Hi all, I have a weird noise when in first and second gear when I pull the clutch up, and also when it is in gear with the clutch up at low speeds. Sounds sort of like a penny or a tiny screw loose in the engine, but the mechanic said it is likely to be the gear box. The car is a 11 plate registered in August so is in the "extended dealer warranty" which as well know is a pile of useless ****.

However, does anyone know if the gearbox and engine is covered in this 3rd year extended dealer warranty?and does anyone have any experience of this or disagree with the mechanics diagnosis? (His "diagnosis" was a quick drive and listen to it btw not a proper check)

Cheers,
Mitch

What sort of mileage are we talking about ? Could it be clutch wear?
Wear and tear is rarely covered by warranty...

28,000! Naff all miles really! Less than half the warranty maximum and only 2 and a bit years of warranty gone

Sounds like a clutch throw out bearing to me. A bad driver can kill one in under 10,000 km so they can basically fail at any milage.

Would this be covered under third year dealer warranty?
If not, how much do you think it would be? Bearing in mind my local fiat garage charge about £110 an hour inc vat!

Depends if it is wear and tear or a manufacturing fault... Sounds like the former, so I'd say it won't be covered... You might still be able to negotiate something ....

don't be silly go to an indie that will charge you 50 max maybe less!

I will depending on the cost because I'm still in "warranty" and I have a service plan which supposedly gets me 30% off labour

Throw out bearings are cheap but it's a gearbox out job. At least four hours I would guess.

Ah that makes me feel a little bet better! I've been hearing 9/10 hours! Which would make it over a grand! Plus the clutch and everything else you may as well replace!

Cheers mate.

So just have to replace the clutch kit then? Guessing that shouldn't be too much money then!
Is it safe to drive on atm?

Just get it fixed asap, of course its not ok to drive with a messed up clutch! Go to an indie and get it checked don't let a dealer kill you.
A clutch change at a dealer will still cost double that of an indie,
my local indie in Greece quoted me 350 euros for a clutch change, Fiat dealer I didn't even want to ask!

No.

I once had a clutch go from an almost unnoticeable slip to essentially losing all traction in less than five miles.

You risk being stranded at any time & facing the prospect of recovery by tow truck.

You also risk making the bill much more expensive than it need be - the clutch assembly will seriously overheat & if that takes out an oil seal you will likely be spending a lot of money.

jrkitching I am at about 60k miles of mostly city driving. I can feel the clutch slip a bit but not too bad. Is it ok if I drive it until the clutch goes and replace it then? Because that's what I was thinking of doing.

If it starts to slip badly I'd change it, you might get another few thousand kms out of it... But it could suddenly go as well... Always a risky proposition...
