Technical TomTom connection

Technical TomTom connection

Easy if you're that way inclined. Three wires, 12v, 12v lighting (for the illumination) and an earth.

The Tom Tom connects via bluetooth, not through the socket.

The wiring side may be easy, but chopping the dash.....

TBH I think the things look bloody awful anyway, and will probably be a discontinued range in 5 years time and all these cars will have pointless holes and mounts in the dash (n)

The dash should have a thinned area where the port goes. A sharp knife should be all it takes.

But I agree, why would anyone want the port? It enables you to pay $400+ for a $100 GPS that you then have to pay for map undates. A $100 Garmin blows the TomTom B&M 2 away and comes with lifetime maps.

Actually Tomtoms have very good graphics, but the CPUs are very slow and they take ages to load. Garmins are much quicker.

Thanks for that

Thats why I modded my mount to take the new Go500, much faster CPU, Free Lifetime maps updates and traffic + a bigger screen + It only costs about £150 + the mount compare tho the very high B&M unit

Can you buy them on their own as a spare / replacement for an existing tomtom unit

You sure can. Check on eBay or Google. Costs me around ~AU $130 delivered, so it's much cheaper for you Europeans. Note that the cradle doesn't fit all TomToms, only some. It's a very tight fit on the TomTom Go 500.

I believe someone else on this forum already tinkered and modified the FIAT/Alfa Romeo Port 68R cradle to take an iPhone, so if you are adept at electronics/soldering you should be able to do the same for a Garmin unit. Basically the cradle is just a power socket, that's all it does.

Yes I have the same Tomtom with lifetime maps, easy to use, easy to read and acquires satellites almost immediately.

Yes and with the 13.4 Firmware update released today the Postcodes feature now works correctly and quickly

With regards the Garmin, I thought about it I have a Garmin as well but it gets its traffic via a DAB Radio unit built into the charger so using the car power would defeat the unit by disabling the power, I understand almost all the Garmin units use either FM or DAB for traffic (DAB ones being much better and almost as good as the TomTom Live), but of course need the charger and lead to act as an antenna. Which is a shame as they are nice units.

Is the TomTom unit fitted with features other than use as a Satnav. The Fiat info suggests that it can control some of yhe Blue&Me features.

You can subscribe to Live Traffic and get traffic/ mobile cameras via your phone. You can even view traffic cameras on your screen (where supported). It's $10 a year I think and supposed to be the most accurate.

Best parts about Garmin: The sleep feature means it's 100% ready to go at key on, when it's 60 degrees in the car last thing I want to do is wait for the GPS to boot. Voice command lets me acutally just say 'go home' ,'petrol' or 'hardware' etc and I'm off. I can even read out a phone number and it works. This didn't seem to work with B&M or the TomToms built in voice recognition. Borderless glass screen looks fantastic.

The B&M Features are not present in the GO500, not much of a loss as it was only trip counter and a few other bits, the enhanced speed of the 500 more than make up for it for me anyway, the fiat unit which is based on the older TomTom range can control your music via the touch screen and phone calls etc.

Hey Flashy I thought you drove a TA?
Is that not a city button I see on the dash??

Well Spotted, When I did my dash upgrade to the leather cover the donor dash was from a a 1.2 and had the city button, I was too lazy to swap over the panel off my TA dash which is packed in storage so am using the City button for "Vrroooom" Mode..:D
