re: Euro6 1.2 Throttle Response & Hill Start Issues

Dealer is insisting that the car is ok and there is nothing that can be done to change it's performance so we are now negotiating over changing it for a new car with a more powerful engine. I am waiting on an offer regarding the 1.3 diesel. Any known issues with this engine? Should we consider the TwinAir?

I've never driven the 1.4, Diesel or otherwise, so I couldn't comment but I do own a TA Lounge 500C and love it. Definitely consider it but also what you want from the car - I was a bit disappointed with the engine at first but it seems to improve as it gets a few miles under its belt and loosens up. Given it's a new bit of kit I'm a little concerned about its longevity and it does demand attention to your driving style, but it's very rewarding and the sound is great. I can't get anywhere near the claimed mpg but that's partly due to preferring fun over frugality. I wouldn't consider it with the Dualogic but others seem quite happy.

Given the problem you have with the original car, I'd be inclined to ask the dealer for extensive road test of both 1.3 diesel and TA. You don't want to rush into decision this big, give it a loooong test drive and make sure you are happy with the performance prior to money changing hands. Good luck!

The question is, is it sensible to buy another car from this dealer if this is the level of dealer support you will receive?

re: Euro6 1.2 Throttle Response & Hill Start Issues

I would look for something else. Its not just the throttle issue with ours I find the whole car poor compared to other modern cars.We got a Hyundai i110 loan car and it was better all round. My wife is thinking about buying one.The Fiat 500 is just nice looking the rest is old Fiat rubbish. It needs decent brakes, suspension and a modern 4 cylinder engine.

Good point! That will depend on the terms of the deal. If they are prepared to exchange the car for a new diesel model on 'reasonable' terms then I would consider that to be good dealer support. However this is far from certain. I am meeting them this afternoon to discuss their proposal in detail. If it is not satisfactory then I will insist on a full refund and look elsewhere.
The fact that they haven't even asked to check out the car suggests to me that that they are already fully aware of the fault and that they do not have any means of correcting it.

I appreciate your comments. I have to say that I was happy with the rest of the car although I have only had it for a week so obviously very early days. However I suspect that you may be right about considering another make.

:yeahthat:

Personally I wouldn't consider buying any new small diesel car.

DPF's have been a game changer for small diesel cars generally and in the opinion of some, break the concept entirely. This article explains it as well as any, but just google 'DPF problems' and form your own conclusions.

Going for a diesel 500 might be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

If the 1.2 was the right choice for your mission profile, and you can't live with the latest changes FIAT have made to this engine, I'd agree you'd do better to look elsewhere.

If you like the cars dont dismiss the Twinair though, it's a great engine and I can confirm it will go up hills from a standing start! They are very tight and a bit lumpy when new so dont be put off by that if you test drive a new model - they do loosen up nicely after a few k. Failing that, yes, look elsewhere!

re: Euro6 1.2 Throttle Response & Hill Start Issues

A very bad response at the dealership. Basically said that there is nothing wrong with our car and if we want to change it for a diesel model then we have to pay another 8.000 euros! Take it or leave it. I said that I want to reject the car and he just shrugged his shoulders and said that he would speak to his boss and get back to us on monday.
Complaint filed with Fiat customer service and awaiting response from them.

Well, that response definitely puts your dealer into the 'unhelpful' category. (n)

Condolences, you must be gutted.

Seems something may be happening on this one.

Allegedly a software update has been released, and there is some vague info on the honestjohn website.

Hopefully though this one can be sorted for those affected.

From the honestjohn website, posted yesterday:

"2-10-2014: Software fix available from Fiat dealers that restores the performance of EU6 1.2 Panda and 500 engines."

I await developments with interest.

I will give my dealer a call on Monday, see if they know about it yet.

re: Euro6 1.2 Throttle Response & Hill Start Issues

Got an e-mail from Fiat Customer Services to give them a call, will ring them in the morning.I hope it is regarding a fix at last. The car seems to be worse at the moment,we have mastered bringing up the clutch but put your foot on the throttle and there is no power.

Going back to previous thoughts on this, it is strange it's not apparently affecting all cars if it's a software issue. Perhaps it's a little subjective and not everyone sees it as a problem.

re: Euro6 1.2 Throttle Response & Hill Start Issues

I see many new 500s being driven by youngsters so they may not have much experience with cars and dont realise there is an issue with the throttle. We have owned many cars and its not normal.I dont expect it to perform like our TT but I dont expect it to be so slow.
