General Brake Clunk :-(

I'd rather buy a cheaper petrol and spend a bit more on fuel. And not give everyone respiratory conditions with the amount of soot produced by 'burning' fuel (badly).

Non HGV diesels need to be banned from citys, not encouraged with 'Green' badge work/ tax reductions. "I've just spent 50K on a luxury car, so now I'm driving around poisoning everyone behind me, cause it might save me a few bucks, all while doing my bit for the environment".

Done it! Here is the video
I would say that it sounds close enough to mine to suggest that it may be the same or at least very similar. Different phones/cameras can emphasise different tones and make them sound different. I would go and try as many other 500's as possible to see what they sound like.

There is some light top end noise until it's fully warm, but FAR from an air cooled engine which has no water jacket to dampen the inevitable piston slap you get with a cold engine. I suspect you're confusing the exhaust note (due to lack of firing impulses) with mechanical noise.

From the cabin, the engine is mechanically almost silent when at operating temperature, far quieter than a diesel could ever be. Anything that burns its fuel in a controlled way, rather than detonating its fuel is always going to be.

(My thinly masked hatred of diesels is coming out there)

My comment came from getting into the test drive vehicle and being taken back to when I had a 126 but as I've said before once its warmed up almost silent :D

Hello there is a cross shaft under the dash, when you press the brake pedal the master cylinder is actually on the passenger side, this shaft & its links pins & bushes sometimes makes a noise. It is sometimes annoying but is just a noise.I would check it anyway, get down under the dash near the pedal with a torch ,press the pedal lightly & try to find exactly which part is noisy it could be n/side or o/side.You may be able to lube or tension something to stop it.Hope this helps.

Spot on, the linkage to the master cylinder can make quite a noise depending on your style if lifting your foot off the pedal. It can be teased into making quite a 'thunk' or can be very quiet.
My TA one seems a bit noisier or sloppier than our 1.2.
I don't think it's anything to be unduly concerned about particularly if its been checked by dealer. You could also compare other 500's.

detonation in diesel engine only occurs when you have a problem, when set up right with correct fuel etc you should have even fuel air burn & controlled expansion with slight diesel knock. In fact I have heard many a 500 Abarth with
a louder crank rattle than the average diesel knock. If you revved a 500 Abarth at idle you would be pleased if it was as quiet as a diesel.

I know its a little bit older thread but one of the only ones I can find with info on this.

I think calling it a "thunk" is the closest I could describe it if you take your foot straight off the pedal when its pushed in.

Is this kind of noise just normal for a Fiat 500?
