Hello!
I have a intermittent problem with my fiat 500. Sometimes (randomly) when putting the clutch in to change gear up/down the revs will rise slightly (hang) as the clutch is engaged making the gear changes abrupt. Its a lot more problematic when going down a gear to slow down in traffic as the car will jump a bit as you let go of the clutch as the revs are up more than should be. Other times it'll be totally fine! Then out of no where it'll start doing it, or even when just starting the car and starting to drive.

Now only thing I've found in the past was the air box was loose on the throttle body. I've tightened it to get it to sit on properly but still not extremely ideal, i.e. you could grab the air box and wiggle it on the throttle body housing. Other problem in the past was the air hoses had deteriorated so I have replaced them.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

The only time I ever find the revs rising after putting the clutch down is during a more spirited drive if you dip the clutch fast it seems to rise a little on revs. I put it down to the load being taken from the engine quickly allowing it to spin faster given the same input.

This could be rubbish but it seemed like it makes sense.

TA does it too, I thought it was to enable smoother gear changes 1st - 2nd in traffic, to stop the lurching that some folks never seem to be able to get out of.

oh, maybe it only does it on choke??? I'll check next time I drive it any distance.

Out earlier in our TA.
No sign of the revs "hanging" between gear changes at all.
Foot off, revs drop .......... instantly.

Regards,
Mick.

TA defo does it when cold, but not when warmed up.
I would never say that the revs hang between gears as per the original question.

Our TA engine runs faster when cold. Lift off in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear and it carries on as if the tickover is too high. Never gone fast or far enough to get into 4th or 5th when cold.

When stationary, it doesn't run fast. Just when we're moving forwards. Not tried it in reverse.

It's just that the engine runs faster when cold whether you're in gear or changing gear.

I reckon our 2001 Clio does the same. I think it's a function of the fuel injection mixture.

What was being described here is nothing new. It is called "rev hang" and I noticed it first in about 2003 when driving a rented Punto (I think) in Europe.
Many modern cars have it to some degree or another and it is annoying as hell when driving manual cars in a spirited manner.
I spent some time looking into the cause of this "feature" and published my findings online (Rev hang and ways of eliminating it - QREVS) with videos and charts.
Web search for "rev hang" reveals that owners of VW, Subaru WRX and other makes have been complaining bitterly about it for years.
I managed to fix it in all four cars I own.

Thanks for this info, but it's not complete.

Why are some folk complaining that their 500 does it, and people like me don't have it at all? Mine is a 2011TA and according to the link, it should have it.

Thanks,
Mick.

Thanks for putting the link in. As a new member with less than 5 posts I was not allowed to do it.

One possibility you do not experience any rev hang is that you learned to drive to avoid it by backing off throttle about 1 or 2 seconds before depressing the clutch pedal when upshifting. Other possibility is that you avoid revving your engine high before upshifting. Or you are just lucky and your car does not have it :).
