Can anyone advise on if its possible to do a full ECU reset (Reboot) whatever its called without taking it into Fiat

What Happened. I was driving home today on an A Road, Suddenly lost all power, all lights on the dash went out Music stopped. Rolled to a halt at the side of the road,

Turned of Ignition and restarted, got all sorts of warning on the dash and it sounded like it was on a single pot..

Turned of Ignition and restarted again, this time it restarted normally, but the Mileage display was not showing on the dash, drove for about 10 mins and the mileage came back,

But now every time a message is displayed on the dash "Danger of ice" or similar or even a music track name the mileage disappears the whole time the message is on the dash, also when you restart the engine the mileage vanishes for about a minute before coming back

Its never done this before so something crashed big time in the system and still is not back 100% by the look of it.

I have disconnected the battery for 10-15 Mins and this clears the clock time etc but has not resolved the problem (Not sure if this completely clears it as the radio still remembers stations and the phone is still paired).

Anyway before I take time out to drag it to Fiat anyone think if there is a way to clear it all down, I don't fancy it going arse over elbow again on the motorway or similar.

Cheers

TBH I think that sounds like a take it to Fiat job. Don't think an ECU reset is going to sort that.

Yeah sort of thinking the same but at the moment as the only issue is the missing mileage

(Nothing recorded in the system logs of the ECU when the fault happened) had it on a reader and checked.

Its one of those Intermittent Faults that Fiat love so much!!

What scanner did you use? Was Fiat ECU Scan? Or multi ECU scan as its now known? If you're in London I have a registered copy and all the cables if you want to catch up, see what it reports?

I suspect your body computer has failed, or there's some dodgy wiring to it. This is the central node for the CAN - and your issues sound CAN related to me; the fact everything seemed to shut down, and the mileage keeps coming and going (the instrument pack can perform as a backup CAN 'host' in the event of a body computer failure).

As asked, did you use multiecuscan on all CAN nodes in the car, and perform a proxy reset?

you have an engine ecu and a body computer missing mileage is more to do with the body computer was your code reader conected to that?

disconnecting the battery will only reset the self learn of engine ecu iirc

No I was using a standard ELM327 Bluetooth and a Reader on an android tablet so a very simple system just reading the stored error codes

Cheers, I am back in the Midlands for a few days, but If I haven't got it resolved by the time I am back in London I would certainly appreciate that.

As above not something I have access to yet, (Been on my to purchase list).

Will upload a video of what it doing in a bit.

Thanks for all the advice.

Here is a link to a video showing the mileage vanishing whenever a message comes up on the dashboard.

This seems to be the only ill effect left over at the moment, but I am concerned there is something underlying this that could cause future problems

Mileage disappears with a message comes up, have you not noticed this previously? ALL Fiats do this, or at least our Stilo, Panda & Bravo do, so that itself isnt a fault.

Have you checked how secure the battery connectors are. Doesn't sound completely ECU related tbh, and even if it were its nt a rebootable issue IMO.

Really it normally disappears when a message comes up!.

I can't believe I have been that dump that over 4 years and 2 500s I have not noticed that before :bang: ... I am sure the mileage always stayed on the dash before, not saying you are wrong but will have to compare with a friends when I am back at work after the weekend.

I just watched the video and from the video alone I see nothing wrong with the display!

Err, what? On my 500 the mileage is always there when tracks change or scrolling. The only time mileage disappears is on cold start when its really cold and you get the warning ice message.

Don't forget jnoiles, you like me have the old school dash display that doesn't have the Start Stop stuff on it. Ours is quite different. The display shown is the new gen display on later model fiat 500's.

Or when any other warning is triggered. See what happens next time you're low on fuel (y)
