Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, as I have been driving my 2012 1.2 500 for only one month now.
I was caught off guard the other day as I got distracted and turned the ignition key when the engine was already running.
Isn't that supposed not to be possible?

It not possible when engine already running position. If you wanna do that turn off engine and pull out key from ignition easily.
Have you forget key inside car and door shut close ?

Ok, let me rephrase that: the "normal" function of the ignition on all my previous FIAT was I could only get to the "starter" position (AV?) once. If the engine wouldn't start, I would have turn the key back to the "off" position to rearm it. On this one I seem to be able to get to the "starter" position twice in a row, even if the engine is already running. Is it a fault or "design"? (by the way, its a 2013 model).

My understanding is that you are correct, PP, it should be impossible to rearm the starter without turning the key full off, then on again.

That's what my 1.3MJ does. I can see why you suspect a fault and tend to agree with you.

Having said that, I have never actually tried to perform that operation on the move, only when stationary.

Anyone else like to weigh in?

I just tried it on my car and it does it. I would say it's not a fault.
It's probably just fiat cutting corners again.

That was a brave move! The sound of gears clashing isn't one of my favorites!
Thanks for checking it! My 500 is on its way to the workshop, so I'll ask them just to get a different answer!
