Having had the Nexus for a few days and seeing RUIs post of using it in car, I asked my OH (Richard) to see what he could do.

The Project cost, (Nexus £189 already had that though), Dash Holder £3.99 from local market, OBDII Bluetooth unit £11.99 from Amazon Torque App £1.99 (Free with Nexus Credit)

Here are the results,

A Very Shaky Youtube video of it in use, promise to do a better one later

Now need to get some time to customise it and play with it, but for the outlay of less than £20 (Excluding the tablet it looks like a real bargain)

Thanks for posting that Flashyphotos. (y)
I would be interested in the boost gauge, cold air intake and not to sure what the fuel gauge is for e.g if it knows the 'quality' of the fuel so the advance can be tweaked.
I wonder if this is going to replace the £230 tomtom as the gadget of the year ?

Don't think I have got the Boost guage set correctly yet, There are some pressure settings I am trying to fugure out, the Fuel Gauge is just that the actual tank level as reported by the ECU rather than fuel quality, am interested to see what sort of % that shows as left when the car bleeps for low level.

Still playing with all sorts of layouts and trying to get my head around the different options Richard has gone out at the mo so will go through it more with him when he comes back, think he knows a little more about it than I do!

Please let us know as i consider the Fiat 500 to have a very conservative fuel gauge; as in when it shows empty there is still some petrol left!

This reminds me of the screen of the Nissan GTR thats built into the car and has 28342934923 different sensors.

Ok, got a few minutes spare so threw Richard in the back with a proper camera rather than the iphone, still a bit wobbly as no fixed mount in the car, but better than the last attempt

Got the dashboard layout a bit more the way I want it now, but there is just so much to customise it gets a bit over the top!

Looks v cool but seems like a massive distraction. Is there any legal implications with obscuring the Windscreen that much?

I don't suppose that there is anything specific covering it, but if you had a collision with someone and the police saw that (particularly with another screen right next to it) I suspect they would think about "due care and attention".

I agree its not an ideal place and its only there for the testing, ideally I would like to get a spare yellow dash panel, and have it mounted in the centre of the panel in front of the passenger,

Just a bit too technical for me, but I am keeping my eyes and ears open in case anyone is looking for a project, :D

(Not letting Richard near it, last project he had was to trim the trees in the back garden now we have no trees and 4 Tons of Logs ) Boys & Chainsaws :bang:

Afraid I disagree, I find when the 500 says I WANT FUEL, (It Means it)..

The Low Fuel Screech just went off (at 31Miles on ranghe counter), and I have driven 0.6 miles since then, just plugged in the Nexus and it shows 7.8% Fuel remaining

So if we work on 35 Litres 7.8% = 2.73 Litres (About right for 35 miles would not want to push it any further than that!!)

Here are the images.

Hiya,

Does the panel with the change pocket still fit in if this is fitted?

Thanks,

Matt

Very Nearly,, But Not Quite, I am going to buy a spare panel and remove the change pocket will also be able to reach in and out and pull the adaptor that way as well

have a similar setup on an android phone in my Bravo, great for checking codes and the odd output like oil temp and doing 0-60 runs

but all those gauges not really any use in normal driving though, and the size is OTT it's a bit too much like Fast and Furious

"DANGER TO MANIFOLD" :ROFLMAO:

I have used it one on my car and I don't think I will again unless it's the check for fault codes.

OK Bit of an update,

I have got rid of the Mini OBDII connector pictured, it was very slow only updating between 7 & 10 settings per second, (Would not connect in Fast Mode at all), and every time you turned of the ignition you had to come out of the Torque app and log back in for it to connect again

Also it was just a bit too big to fit under the Dash trim which was the reason for getting the first one in the first place.

So I have gone for a cheaper Full Size ELM327 Bluetooth, its worlds apart from the mini one, as well as costing less (Only £9.99), it updates in fast mode at 40/50 PIDs a second, allowing for smoth real time graphics on the guages with no lag, and also reconnects after switch off with no need to reset the software.

I have modded the Dash pocket trim over the OBDII Port by removing the coin pocket (Its only glued on and easy to remove and reseat in the future), although a brand new spare trim from Fiat Parts is only £10

This makes it nice and easy to pull out the OBDII connector when you have finished with it, although the battery drain is so low there really is no harm leaving it in all the time,.

My main aim is to now find a way of mounting the Nexus in front of the passenger seat for work use, (We need to accept assignments from a web interface while driving) at the moment using the iphone is fiddly, and there is a touch android app that does the job, (There is already permenant Wifi in the car from a mifi hotspot).

So the ideal would be to have the Nexus mounted in the dash plate in front of the passenger, so they can accept/reject the job on the web interface, and use the map app etc.

That would be the ideal, it may just end up being hand held job by the passenger. (Luckily I always have an assistant in the passenger seat when working).

Anyway here is the modded panel with the new OBDII not very pretty at the moment but at least easy to glue back to standard or replace.

OK, still working on refining this system.

As stated earlier the above dash mount was too cumbersome and blocks a lot of view, so thought about dash mounting,

Had a play and decided on a Refined Version of the RUI Bluetack and Spit method! :D

£4.99 Case with a bit of sticky back velcro on the top dash, it now sits smoothly and evenly over the radio with no rattles (Which I hate!!)

Now working as OBDII Dash, Music Player via B&M, Full Satnav via Navigon Europe & Google Navigation, Video Player & Internet access via the in car mifi internet, and most important I now get my assignments flashed to the screen and I dont have to fumble for the iphone and try and read a tiny message..

Here are some images and a youtube of the voice nav in action (Voice also works perfectly for requesting Apps and Webpages etc)

OK, still working on refining this system...

Thanks for all the updates flashyphotos. Useful knowing that the full size Bluetooth module does the 'fast update'. And it's only by experimenting will you know what works. Did you manage to get the boost gauge working yet ?

During the week the Tom Tom Live 2 stopped working stating 'No GPS Signal'. Only just got a chance to do the updates and do a reset by holding down the on/off button for 30 seconds until the 'Drums started beating'. As an interim solution had to revert to the Navfree app on the iphone whilst the OH was double checking that I was going the 'right way' with the same app running on an ipad. This was through a tricky part of a city that I wasn't familiar with. Did notice that the Sat Nav app eats the battery.

When you're 2 up and using the car as a mobile office MiFi comes into play. Did notice that having a build-in cellular connection with a different service provider gives better connectivity. Broadband coverage can still be a bit patchy but at least one of the broadband providers will work.

What's working best for us is the ipad on the lap of the passenger, tom tom dedicated for sat nav and iphone on the pillar side (for me) for any alerts. Expecting improvements with the promised release of the bigger screen on the iphone 5.

Not entirely convinced as to where the Nexus fits in. For a play with the torque app a Smartphone would do just as good a job and wouldn't need having to resort to a 7 inch screen unless it become your only device. And even them it doesn't provide the capability of a multi-screen.

Yes the Boost Gauge is working now, the updates on the old OBDII unit were to slow for it, all works perfect now.

The TomTom is still the best navigation source, I find the HDTraffic spot on, but it can be cumbersome looking for oscure places or when you have only been sketchy info, that where google on the Nexus comes into its own. I did try with the ipad but just found it a bit cumbersome in the car,

Jobs instructions can be obscure as,

"Boris is the a pub, the one on the junction of Rose Street "You know the one" Red Lion or something!, Please image and Wire ASAP.

Google Search is so much easier for trying to decipher that than on the tomtom.

Where the Nexus comes into its own is integration with the works system for processing images.

I did a test in a live work situation yesterday, 20 images, transferred by wifi to the Nexus direct from the camera, tagged and uploaded by FTP to the Newsdesk in 7mins, all sitting in the car while being driven on to the next assignment, I normally have to do it by laptop which is too big to open on your lap in the 500, so have to be parked up somewhere, even then by the time you boot the laptop transfer images from card tag and FTP it never takes less than 15mins, time wasted sitting around, where with the Nexus we can move on straight away.

So for quick jobs arounnd London it really comes into its own, I would not attempt it on larger jobs where there are 100s of images ot sort for quality and upload, would do my eyes in!!

Anyway waffling on now, must stop that... So in conclusion, for me I think the Nexus is a keeper, the OBDII Stuf is a novely and a toy, but the other features of it are superb and if it saves carrying a laptop that always seems to need a charge when you need it then its a real (y)

Hiya,

Does the panel with the change pocket still fit in if this is fitted?

Thanks,

Matt

I havent looked at the 500 port yet but in the GP you can quite easily unclip the port from its holder (theres just a tab on the left that you push in and the port just pushes through)

Once unclipped you just connect up your bluetooth dongle and then cable tie the whole assembly behind the metal plate.

That should let you keep the coin holder in :)

Many Thanks, I have just had a look at it and that does seem possible, will try it later and report back, up to my neck running around playing catchup for work at the moment, after being stuck at the DVLA office for 2 hours today getting my plate trasfer done. What a muppet I am for deciding the end of the month was a good time to go to the DVLA.. :yuck:
