Technical Reset 'Change Oil' Warning Light

I ordered:

ELM Bluetooth adapter: OEM - ELM327 OBDII V1.4 CAN-BUS Bluetooth Diagnostic: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics
Collection of cables: FiatECUScan Cable Adaptors for Engine ECU, Airbag, ABS: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

And bought a registered copy of Fiat ECU Scan. So all up I've got about £100 worth of kit.

So far I've mostly just had a poke around the software and logged a bunch of things to a .csv file. Plenty of warning reset options in there but I haven't had a proper play with it yet. I'm hoping to have some time on my hands later this week. I'll take some screen shots of the 500 specific stuff if anyone's interested?

Also, if you buy the packages above, the green cable is the one you need to talk to the bosch brains inside the 500.

you buy the modded bluetooth adaptor?

as it needs some bits tweaking internally to work i gave up trying to get mine to connect and went hard wired pre modified

and a set of patch leads

Red air bags and abs

green ECU ABS and PAS

Yellow low speed can (body computer)

also a fair few need the ELM which is not in the amazon bundle above be ware of the aluminium ELM 327 as many are the wrong version and any claiming to be 1.5 are not genuine as they currently only go upto 1.4

Turtle, I tried the kwik fit route charged me 30 quid took 3 hours and gave up - told me they would contact their uber tech who has "superdouper" software - Not impressed - dont know if anyone except fiat can get rid of this message

Sorry to hear that! It is meant to be £30 for "diagnostic check" but I suspect the £20 went straight in the guys pocket - not that I'm complaining!

I had to remove the panel to access the diagnostic socket myself (not a problem), and then he asked me various questions about the engine (Does it have a turbo/supercharger, does it have a DPF etc.) It wasn't any problem for me but I suspect he wouldn't have managed it had I not been there!

Cheers, That gives me hope that they did use the same bosch diagnostics kit and got rid of the change oil message for you. So I will carry on phoning them - they were able to change the service milage etc. but the guy just could'nt shift the "change oil message". So i'm thinking its the guy rather than the kit then.

No, mine was just off the shelf. I've read about the hacks you need to do to get the other cables working for the airbags and body ecu to work with the other cables. I've got another bluetooth ELM on order to experiment with. For now the green cable does everything I needed it to, fault code reset etc.

Jason, I'm a bit confused here. Why do you need the Bluetooth Elm thingy as well as the suite of cables?

Is the Elm another interface or an additional diagnostic device?

Would most people simply need the FiatEcuScan + the 3 coloured cables?

Finally, would this program be the best affordable option for resetting the 500 service light?

Thanks!

the way I understand it, you plug the cables into the ELM and then the ELM communicates between the PC and the relevant ECU.

In the car it goes:

OBDII ---> Appropriate cable ---> ELM --->bluetooth magic ---> Laptop with software :)

The cables can be changed depending on what model etc you're connecting to.

Yes, all they're doing is changing the cable configuration - i.e. say Pin 1 on the ELM plug is for K line low, and Pin 2 is K line high, you then need to adapt which set of K lines you're connecting to on the cars diagnostic plug.

This isn't really needed with CAN, as it's a common bus, so all of the ECUs in the car sit on the same data bus.

Yeah, there a guy at work who does vehicle diagnostics on the side and we plugged the thing he has into the 500 and it worked fine on everything :) But he paid about a grand for it and it's £500 a year so you'd expect it to work! :)

I've just come up against this problem of re-setting the oil-change warning, I dumped my Fiat Dealer/garage not for the charges they make but for for two pieces of what I consider, negligence.

Firstly I asked them to fit mud-flaps all the way around, they did it for £60 which was surprisingly cheap but fitting the wrong flaps meant the work looked like a poor DIY attempt using parts from other cars. Then, the air-bag compartment under the steering column had one corner coming away, when I took the 500 back during warranty they said, "Oh, it'll be OK". When I took it to another Fiat garage they said some clips had broken, maybe after some re-call work, Eh ?

I was dissatisfied so took the 500 to the garage who has looked after our cars for ten years, called him today when the oil light came on after a service and he said he can deal with it. Certainly he always has the software to deal with our VW Beatle problems so it's just a matter of a garage subscribing to the right software.
