Opened the car door and the handle came away at the front, great so thats washers, rear washer pipe, corroded rear springs and now the door handle..and its out of warranty. How easy is to take off the inner door panel:bang:

Oh dear, I can't offer any help re the door panel but sorry to hear of your troubles :(

There was a thread within the last month by a guy with a blog who services cars whose friend's 500 had the handle break the day he had it in for a service. He posted pictures (in his blog I think).

Michael - can you find it?

Have a vague recollection of that guy but from a 'little looking around' can't find it. Sorry.

That'll be spannerdude's blog.

However it only has pics of the handle not removing the door panel. Just scroll down to the right place.

That'll be me then.

Yes, I sorted out the same problem recently. The front hinge had seized and snapped.
Interestingly I checked my own 500 out and when I opened the door, the handle wasn't returning all the way on that too. I always have an aerosol can of white grease handy for door locks and hinges. I put the tube off a WD40 can on it, fiddled it into the recess behind the handle and gave it a good lathering. Works fine now. :)

The good news is that when we changed the broken hinge we didn't need to take the handle all the way off. There are 3 screws, two in the door grab and one behind the chrome trim on the inside handle. Remove the door card, it's on typical "fir tree" clips that pull out of the door and the top edge just hooks over.
Once you've got access you can see the 10mm nut that holds the hinge and there is a torx bolt into the handle from the jamb. Undo these and the handle slides forward out of it's keyway. This should give enough room to get a stubby screwdriver in and undo the screw holding the hinge. Then as our friend Mr Haynes always says reassembly is the reverse of removal ;)

I picked up a second hand handle and only used the hinge. I don't know if you can buy the hinge on it's own. If not I might go into business making them, I suspect I'd do a roaring trade!

As mentioned there are some pics of the handle on my blog.
