Ok this is my 2nd attempt as the forum timed me out and I lost the whole blardy thread!!!

Just wondered if anyone has had problems with the engine cutting out and no before you ask not stop and start (although that's a bit random when it works as well!)

I've got a 6 week old twin air plus but the problem started when about 2 weeks old.

I'd started the car after work (obviously engine cold) and was just checking my phone before getting ready to drive off when I felt the car judder, cough and splutter and just died on me. The start and stop not available message flashed up (even though I hadn't actually driven anywhere and consequently stopped lol) had to restart engine again with key and then was fine.

Just dismissed it that time until it did it again a few days later, so took her in and of course no problems found they said if it happened again then they would keep her for a couple of days so they could start her from cold - fair enough.

They rang me the following wek and said there's a recall on my car something to do with the engine so both me and the lovely lady on reception think this might solve the problem but no it turns out after checking serial numbers on the coil my numbers don't match the recall!

So off I go again until the following week when I pulled up to the supermarket (engine warm this time) and my start and stop actually worked I was just grabbing my bag and about to take the key out of ignition but then 10 seconds later the car started itself only to then cough splutter and die on me again after about 20 seconds with the same stop and start not available flash up!

So back to the garage again yesterday and again they can't find anything wrong but there was a software update for start and stop, they reset all parameters (?), carried out a throttle learn (?) and performed several road tests (I'd also complained that she felt hestitant whilst driving - hubby said the same) but none of them felt it and also said that start and stop worked every single time gggrrrr - funny thing was when the lady bought the car back to me (she collects and delivers while I'm at work) she parks it next to where my car was so we can swap car park spaces and the car was sitting there with the engine running - so clearly start and stop not worked that time!!!

Feel quite disappointed with this car - I had a 1.2 sport for 3 years without any problems at all.

Oh and I've also had to have my wipers and wiper arms replaced as they nearly got ripped off whilst doing 80 on a French motorway but that's another story lol

sorry for the long waffle but wanted to give you all the facts!!!

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions

I've not heard of any issues like this, I'm afraid - it might pay to be a little more persistent with the dealership until you get this fixed. Little intermittent faults can be quite hard to track down, but I suspect there would have been some fault codes logged in the EMS, so if the dealer actually did some proper diagnosis, they'll find something.

Thanks bgunn

The dealer has plugged her in at least 4 times and each time no errors are detected.

I'm not worried as obviously it's under warranty - but clearly there is something wrong with her - just irritating when nothing can be found and of course the dealer can't replicate it

Oh well I dare say I'll be ringing them again this week

Hi Jax19,

Sorry to hear you are having troubles with your new car, I can imagine it's worse given that you had no trouble with your 1.2 500.

I cannot offer you any technical advice on your problem, but one piece of advice that well-informed forum users have suggested on here many times is that you ask to speak directly with the dealer expert technician (DET) at your dealership.

They are the ones who will be most able to help you out rather than anyone else.

Ignore the thread content as it is not the same, but here is one such suggestion:

Thanks Super Uwe :)

I think every technician in the dealership has had input and taken her out on roadtest :bang:

pleased to report since they last had her on Friday and changed the coils I've not had any problems

doing a motorway trip tomorrow so will see if she's still hesitant as well!!

Hi Jax19,

Joined this forum because I found your thread when googling problem with my car
. I have been having a nightmare few weeks with my twin air cutting out at junctions and when slowing down, and then the indignity of holding up traffic while trying to get the thing started again. It is now in the dealership for the 2nd time having already having the ignition coils changed (and obviously no success). Did you get your problem sorted or found anyone who has had same issues? I am sadly falling out of love with my car

Welcome to our forum Bella!

I hope things get sorted for you - hopefully with our help.

Do stay with us (and post some pix!) once you are (hopefully) sorted.

Thank you for the welcome snes.
Don't find these sites very easy to use though!
Bella still sick in the dealership and thank goodness it cut out on the technician on a test drive this morning so at last they have experienced the nightmare!!
Will keep posting with updates.
Ciao.....

I suspect things are moving forward already.

Most people on here find that their intermittant faults never replicate at the dealers. You are therefore V lucky!!

We must have thrown some FF magic dust in your direction.

Could be a good week to buy a Lottery ticket.......

Happy days are upon me once more, I am very pleased to report!!:D Your magical fairy dust must have done the trick, but don't hold out much hope on the lottery numbers.............
So, after the spectacular breakdown on the Fiat technician (they had to get a recovery vehicle to get it back to workshop, Ha ha!) a genuine, kosher, it's in my hand and look it's broken, fault was found on a leaking oil switch that was buried deep, deep, deep within the engine. This apparently was causing the car to think that the pressure was dropping and therefore cause the cut out..
So altogether, hopefully, touch wood, rub that lucky rabbits foot and four leaf clover, all is now well. I have been out several times and my beautiful Bella is running like the lean, mean, twin air machine that I fell in love with at the beginning.

Thank you and ciao. Will be back................

Interestingly in the case of the TA which shed all its oil on the road shortly after leaving the dealership, AFAIK the engine did NOT cut out :bang:.

Hey Bella - I'm so pleased!

And thanks for posting back to us - it really does help others.

What an obscure fault tho.....

Hi, we have a two year old Fiat 500 Twin Air and the engine cuts out approximately every 4-5 months and then the vehicle cannot be started.

The car has been to dealerships at Chelmsford(Glyn Hopkin) and Colchester(D.Salmon), GH were hopeless and DS although more helpfull still couldn't find a fault.

The problem generally occurs when making a low speed manoeuvre and is very frustrating.

I feel we have no choice but to get rid of the car and buy something reliable, in fairness I was warned against buying a Fiat....

Though it's no consolation to you, the 500 has proven to be a very reliable car overall. With over 1.2 million of them manufactured the breakdown/ fault stats are quite low.
But in your case there is a frustrating issue, hope you can stick with it and fix it, but understand why you might want to move on.

In fairness the person who warned you against buying a Fiat was an idiot.

These sort of things can happen to any car, the 500 is generally reliable. If it were my car I'd probably replace the grounding straps.

Different engine 1.2 but my wife's did the same, it was 3 weeks old before totally died luckily I had it that day as it cut out half way across the road! That was a crankshaft sensor , touch wood it has been faultless since... Except the 3 windscreens ... Another story !
