Technical TwinAir: Will it be reliable? (discuss)

Is the TwinAir a NA engine, or has it been modified for the turbocharged application like the 1.4 Tjet was over the NA 1.4 16v- ie, lower compression, steel-forged crank, forged pistons, etc? ;)

When the Sales-guys were introduced to the TwinAir, they were shown a development engine producing silly numbers, so there's little doubt in the strength of the internals.

The only issue I can see is the strength of the gearbox. Getting a compact 'box in a 500 that can also handle diesel-like torque is a struggle, and is a factor in the TA being currently capped to 85bhp from what I know.

I get the impressionthat the gearbox on the TA is the C154 which has a theoretical limit of 150Nm. The TA in 85bhp form is outputting 145Nm so it is just under the limit. It may be also a factor in the delay in the 103bhp (I thought it was 105bhp) version - I wonder if there are plans to change to the tougher gearbox from the MJ II for the Zagata.

Not criticising Mr Maxi - just trying to draw attention to the very specific nature of oils at the moment with the varying limits on ash content and all that stuff.

Funnily enough the Castrol Edge spec sheet on the back of the bottle I have says 9.355535-S2 which is obviously a misprint

I noticed that too when I changed my oil recently. The error is also carried over to the datasheet:

I think I've still got another oil change or so of Selenia left before I'm onto my Castrol :p Depending on mileage I think I'll do an oil change before winter or just after.

I haven't had need to use it, I'll swap it next time I'm passing.
Good :) Tbh I doubt you'll need to use any oil really. Over the almost 2 years and just over 26k miles we've had our car it's only used maybe 400ml of oil and a good deal of that was when were did our roadtrip and were doing 90mph or so most of the time.

that would be worth putting on to youtube.:)

Daniel, sorry I was a bit tardy in replying to your question and thanks to JR and others for filling in the information, (i.e. Selenia K Pure Energy) for me. (y)

As stated, there is more to oils these days, remember when you could just go out and buy some Castrol GTX and get away with it in most cars?

It's within the speedlimits where we were :) The 1.2 was surprisingly easy to keep up there and I never seemed to get in anyone's way.

Off topic for a moment, but the 1.2 engine is a peach and exceptionally smooth revving. Mine cruises happily at an indicated 80 on the motorway. The only downside is the fuel consumption at this speed. Maxi, what was the fuel consumptionreading at a steady 90? I'd guess about 37mpg or maybe less.

If you think your 1.2 is a peach now, then just wait till the 36k service and get the tappets done as well as getting the oil, plugs and all the filters done. Mine is such a hunny at the moment after its service on Wednesday. So smooth and so much more willing than it was on Tuesday when I dropped it off.

As for what mpg you can expect at 90 mph, over ~2500 miles the car did an average of 47mpg (measured at the pump) although of course the average speed wouldn't have been 90mph but a signigicant amount of time was spent up there at those speeds. Of course the speedo over reads so 90 is probably more like 80 in real life :)

This is more or less the route we did through Europe. Most fun I've ever had on a holiday and I'm hoping to do something similar this year :)

The points on the route don't necessarily indicate where we stayed, just the route we took :)

You're forgetting that a gearbox in it's very nature is a torque multiplier. ;)

Hence the reason why it is commonplace now for manufacturer's to include torque-limiting mapping when in first and second gear to reduce the chances of failure and extend the 'box's life.

Fiat had to modify the same box for the 1.3 mjet (C514R) in an attempt to increase its torque-handling capability.
