Collect my 500C twinair later this week - been waiting for the 2 cylinder to arrive for a while. Love the noise and living in London will benefit from the congestion charge exemption - a lot !! I'll have to live with the economy tho' !!!

Quick question for you learn'ed folks here tho' :)

The dealers rather throw away advice of 'just boot it straightaway' didnt fill me with confidence .. Any specific running in advice for the first few hundred miles or is the dealer correct ?? .....

Don't go redlining it or anything for the first few hundred miles or anything and make sure it gets the chance to warm up before you give it revs or get the turbo spinning and like Dave says, just drive it.

I suspect there are as many opinions on the best way to run in a car as there are people. I'll just add that it's not only the engine that benefits from considered bedding in - in particular, I'd go easy on the brakes for the first couple of hundred miles. Also, most tyre manufacturers recommend driving at modest speeds (whatever that means) on dry roads for the first 100-200 miles, avoiding harsh acceleration, braking or cornering.

Blimey - Prompt AND learn'ed advice...

Many thanks guys - havent had a 'new' car for many years and previously have just taken it a bit easy for the first 1000 miles... going to be hard as the twinair just wants to rev and rev ...

I have a 1966 Alfa as well and I didnt think I'd find another engine so rev happy until the 'twinny' !!!

Really looking forward to it ... I'll report back once I'm behind the wheel ..

A very early Duetto.... well spotted 306maxi ... doesn't get used as often as it should and 'something' always needs doing to it! However for the few days each year that its running on song and the sun is out is worth it!! Wouldnt swap it for anything else ....

I too had never owned a new car until buying my 500 diesel, doing a google search for running in a diesel found this - "http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/running-in-a-diesel/", this for petrol - "http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/running-in-a-petrol-engine/". (Is this my fifth post? I'll be able to insert clickable links then :))

No! just 4 :D
Burger - what about now? No, next post, 6th, will be OK "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FitnIG_2Kws" - what I do for sport, not me in the vid but I do have a Steigeisen :) (way off topic, sorry)

What's that about "not changing oil for 10.000 miles when the car is new" in the honest John's article? Aren't fiats factory filled with synthetic oil?

Is it special 'new engine' oil with extra additives perhaps?

Yay, 6!

All you might need to know about oils - and then some! BITOG - Bob is the Oil Guy. Honda appear to use special first fill oil - MX-5 forum

Nice :) Pictures please!

Hmm - Do I need to up my number of posts to upload pictures .??. Will share a photo of both when I've collected the 500c ... Having a bit of a moment I've gone for the wrong colour choice ... suffer from mild OCD and have been worrying .. tech house grey (which I now worry is a bit blue) with a red roof and leather that matches my eyes ... also red ..

I'll put it down to last minute nerves...

Anyway - running in advice appreciated and useful - will just drive normally without any thrashing !!

Thanks all

Just picked up a TwinAir, so kind of running it in. The dealer told me no need to service midterm and just bring it in 12 months later, not to sure about that.

I can see what all the fuss is now with TA, on Eco mode the car tells you to shift up at 1500 revs (or so) and then it wants to judder & stop - stupid thing and crazy eco programing. The only way to use the car is on normal mode and foot to the floor, no wonder MPG is c**p, but massive fun.

Xenons, interscope and all the goodies look / sound great pics soon.
