hi, i just got a 2009 500 for my wife. the dealer tells me it only comes with one key from fiat. i would like to have a spare one for the car and wondered if anyone could recommend me a course of action ? i am in leicester so a local or postal solution would be the prefered option. the car is a 1.2 sport in red.
thanks for reading,john.

The car should come with two keys & it sounds like the dealer is trying to fob you off (sorry about that pun), Only one of the keys supplied with the car when new is a remote, though. Replacement keys can only be ordered through main dealers, are frighteningly expensive & require the car to be reprogrammed to accept the new key. This cannot be done remotely & you will need to take the car to a FIAT dealer for the programming. Make sure you are sitting down before you ask the price - you have to pay to get the electronic key code, which is kept on a central register, you have to pay main dealer prices for the key (which has to be ordered from FIAT), and you have to pay for the programming.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

When i was picking my car up and noticed it only had 1 flip/central locking key, and 1 normal, i asked how much it would be if i needed to replace it and they said £176

so its a trip to the dealers then. not sure where fiat main dealer is in leicester. google is my friend i guess. any ideas how much notice they need and how long it takes to do the job from arrival to leaving?
i only ak as with the smart cars it can take several hours to do any reprogramming jobs on the car.

Has anyone priced the cost of a spare key i.e. not the one with the remote capability but the standard spare key.
I on the Marea that I have it has the RED key and I have a backup blue key for the blue key that is used everyday.
It's worth noting that if you get a Meta Alarm installed it will come with a free 'fob' that also includes opening the boot but you still need a key to start the car :).

The reprogramming will only take a few minutes but the key has to be ordered from FIAT after you have provided the necessary vehicle identity documents & proof of ownership so it may actually be 2 trips to the dealers.

The old red & blue key system is not used on newer FIATs - the type 2 key system is fundamentally different.

IIRC a replacement standard spare key + programming will cost you something in the region of £100-£150 depending on which dealership you use.

thanks for all the quick replies. its useful to be able to find information loke this on a forum . i think i will phone the dealer and discover the rules of engagement with paperwork and time required to order in a key etc. my wife loves the car , she has had the middle daughter programming the stereo computer phone thing up to accept her music. apparently i phones dont talk to the car? there may be an application we can download though? my wife would like her phone to link to the bluetooth bit of the stereo?all a bit beyond me to be honest.
i drive a 29 year old car with wind your own windows.............

Hold on, so was the car not bought at a Fiat Dealer? It's just your first post suggested this was the case?

hi, i just got a 2009 500 for my wife. the dealer tells me it only comes with one key from fiat.

TBH, if I were buying a car, I'd make it a condition of the sale that the car came to me with two keys. A Salesperson would rather swallow a £200 cost than knock £1000 off the price. ;)

i have no idea who you are,and i dont want you to take this the wrong way but who do you think you are? i never said i bought the car from a fiat dealer. i would thank you to keep your assumptions and opinions to yourself sir.

I think you may have taken him the wrong way. Its just if it was a fiat dealer suggesting it should only have 1 key that would be bad service as they should know better. Also you really dont want dannyboy to keep his opinions to himself, he knows his stuff on a technical level most of us can only be jealous of. Its the problem with the written word somtimes the meaning behind the actual words can be easily misinterpreted. :)

If you want people to keep assumptions and opinions to themselves may I make the suggestion that you turn your computer off and what ever you do dont look at a forum and even worst please never ask for help on one because you know people may give you their assumptions and opinions.

:bang:

We can supply working keys for the new 500's, £60 total. This is not a remote key and it will start the car.
You will need to bring the car to me in Benfleet, Essex.

I'll be in liecester in a couple of weeks time, taking my daughter back to Demont Fort.
If you like, you can send me the key so I can cut the new blade. I can programe it when I come up to the Uni.

As you are new to the forum I'll answer that question for you. D4nny8oy is one of the most helpful guys on the forum and his technical knowledge is second to none. He doesn't even own a 500 but posts on here to help people like you and me and you can be assured that there was nothing other than an honest intent to try and save you some money.

To be frank, the way you worded your post it was entirely feasible to assume you bought it from a Fiat dealer and putting sir at the end of your rant doesn't excuse your bad manners.

If you wish to get any more help I would suggest an apology is in order because your attitude will not stand you in good stead which would be a shame as if you own a 500 you will find the forum extremely useful.

Don't bother. Once he's had all of his questions answered he'll be gone, perhaps only returning when the breather pipe on his car goes, at which point he won't bother to search the forum and will post a thread asking the best course of action, of course I'll be first to reply saying that he should take the car to Debenhams or his local kebab shop as they're both well aware of this issue. I might even through in a totally irrelevant comment regarding goats.

As you were.

ok chaps ive read your posts and considered my response.
you can in fact kiss my arse. you are making threats of what will happen if i dont apologise.
your just little jumped up children.
i tell you what ill do boys. ill pay someone to fit my reversing sensors and make my key and get on with living my life while you carry on your fantasy of somehow being important in the great scheme of things.

Bye, please let the door hit you on the way out (y)

If 500ski is wearing a pair of skis the door might trip him up 'on the way out'. I'm sorry I gave him a response when he was asking about Blue & me. I politely gave him a 2 liner to answer his query and qualified it with that it should have been posted in a different section. You cann't buy manners. I wish him the best with his sensors...:D
