Technical Howto fix a squeaky fan

I had this problem three years ago when I owned a 2010 1.4 Sport. Lubricating the bearings didn't seem to help much.

I figured out the problem was caused by the brushes squeaking on the (rather roughly machined) commutator. So the second time that I took it apart (as per the steps above), I opened the motor to remove the armature shaft (the casing is crimped together), clamped it in a drill press, and polished the commutator with 400, 800, 1200 grit wet sandpaper and then metal polish (Autosol), so it was mirror-smooth. It previously had machining grooves that could snag a fingernail. I mean grooves running around the segments, not the grooves between the segments.

Reassembled and never had the squeaking again.
