Afternoon everyone,

Am hoping someone may be able to assist with this!

Basically our car has given off a high-pitched, piercing alarm sound on three separate occasions now. The first two happened about 3 weeks ago and lasted for about 5 seconds when it was dark and most of the electrics were on. It happened again today and lasted for approx 15 secs, but none of the electrics were on at all.

The best way I can describe it is that it sounds a bit like a constant warning alarm if you leave your lights on after switching the engine off and then open the driver/passenger door. However, as us 500 drivers will know, the lights automatically go off once the key is removed - so I don't suppose it's that!

The noise appears to be coming from the boot area, although to be honest it is so high-pitched that it really it hard to pin-point where it's coming from. Perhaps it might be coming from the speakers?

As a further note, there are no warning lights displayed on the dash, nor are there any messages popping up on the trip computer either. Our car doesn't have the rear parking sensor either. So on that basis there doesn't appear to be anything noticeably wrong with the car.

I'm assuming there's a loose connection somewhere, but I have no idea what it might be!

Thoughts and suggestions?

Edit: Further to the above, the sound is even more high-pitched than the squeal when you start moving and the driver/passenger seatbelt isn't fastened. But it's that constant high pitch if you know what I mean.

Was anything heavy on your seats? Possibly setting of the seatbelt warning sound?

That sounds the best reason so far as that makes alot of noise, my mates are forever not putting the seatbelt so i know how high pitch that is, so maybe you have a faulty seatbelt sensor

Except he said it happened on one occasion when there were no electrics on. :(

{EDIT} unless I am misunderstanding exactly what the OP means by "no electrics"

OP do you mean that the ignition was OFF?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not personally convinced that it's the seatbelt sensor because it's not quite the same sound. The first couple of times it happened there were two of us sat in the front, whereas today it was just me driving and there was nothing on the front seat. But I won't rule it out completely as it may well be that the fault is causing it to have a different pitch.

As for the fuel pump, that could well be true as it's in the right area. But again the car primes correctly when turning the ignition on, and there are no warning lights either. Also the handbook doesn't say anything about there being an alarm linked to the fuel pump (but I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't!(y)).

Weird...

Hi Grimwau,

Sorry - to clarify for you. Each time it's happened we have been driving along, so the engine has been running.

As for the electrics, what I was referring to was the lights, radio, fan etc. So the first time it happened most things were on as it was dark and raining, whereas today I didn't have anything on at all.

Could this maybe be brake squeal ?, touch brake lightly when it happens to see if alters.

regards

Mal

Cheers, thanks for clarifying, after re-reading I wasn't certain if I was interpreting it correctly.

:ROFLMAO:

Oh dear....taxi for one please.

The alarm was the frigging carbon monoxide alarm that we'd left in the boot when we moved house!!

It had somehow managed to get stuck inside a pair of trainers that I've got in the boot - went for a walk today and was about to change into the said trainers when they suddenly started beeping away!:p

On a positive note, at least we now know it's nothing wrong with the car now...

What a berk I am:)

£10 on something to do with fuel pump

That's a tenner you owe me Rob.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Well, the battery on the alarm is fine, so I guess the test button must have been pressed when driving along (suppose bumpy roads could have caused it). Still feel a right plonker.

Fingers crossed it wasn't going off because the carbon monoxide levels were too high...
