Technical First week, first problems 'Check Engine' message?

Mine did exactly the same just 24 hrs after I picked it up. All the same engine failure lights and warning, stop start failure etc. I rang the dealer to see what was happening and got the usual fiat dealer response, the salesman who had been by pretend best mate for the last month could no longer give a s*#t and apparently it was just my fault for riding the clutch. I do admit that just before it happened I was sitting at a particularly steep set of traffic lights and may have inadvertantly ridden the clutch very slightly, but come on, I've been driving for 20 years and never had any clutch or gearbox problems so this many warning lights is surley overkill. Anyway I then tried speaking to the service dept who were polite but not much more helpful. I asked how serious the problem was and should I drive it the 30 miles to the dealer and their response was "its upto you" ! thanks a lot.
Anyway they said to leave it a couple of hours and it would probably reset itself, if it didnt then leave it overnight and it definatley should by then.
Cut to next morning and no change, still all the warning lights and messages so I decided to try a DIY fix and it worked!!!!!!!

Turn on the ignition and start the car - warning lights on etc
Turn off ignition
Turn ignition back on but DONT start engine, then turn off the StopStart with the switch on the dash
Start the engine and 'hey presto' no warning lights
With the engine still running, switch the StopStart back on and I've not had a problem since

Surely someone at Fiat has thought to try that and we could just be warned about it before picking our new car up and told the fix :bang:

Our car (ByDiesel 1.4 petrol) is 10 days old and has done 400 miles. The usual warning lights stayed at yellow. Took it down to Sheffield and they reset the computer. They said the software someone from Holland mentioned (in another post) is only for the 1.2 and there is not a fix for the 1.4. They also said the car will reset itself after 22 "periods" of the clutch not being slipped for more than 10 seconds and also said the car is OK to drive when those particular lights are displayed.
In our case we have to slip the clutch every time we reverse out of the garage and down a small slope to the road.
I presume the software is written by Bosch who make the Stop & Go Starter Motors.

I had exactly the same problem yesterday, tried waiting overnight to see if it would reset itself, no joy even tried Myluigi's trick but that didn't work either so phoned my local Fiat dealer this morning (SGM) and they said bring it in and we will reset it, it's probably one of the error codes for Clutch or Gearstick.
So I did and they reset it and said that all the error codes were for the Stop Start system they just built up and decided enough was enough. The good news is that he put on a software update that is supposed to desensitise the problem of hovering over the clutch or riding it.
Will have to wait and see but so far the Start/Stop seems to be working much better.

Hello, I have had my Fiat 500 for 5 months. I was at the lights this morning and the engine cut out. I had to re-start and then got the message that the start/stop was unavailable and that I should check the engine.

I called the dealer and I can't get an appointment until next week as they are busy. The man I spoke to said that it was still safe to drive until then but I am worried I might be damaging the engine - is it still safe to drive until then do you think?

Thank you

is the check engine light still on as you drive? or is it intermittent. If the check engine light is always on go find another dealer who will look at it.

Thank you. The engine is light is on all the time as is a warning ! within a triangle. The issue is I bought it from Gynn Hopkins Fiat dealership so have to take it back to them and they will fix it for free hopefully, don't really want to pay.

Many thanks

is the car 5 months old or did you buy it 2nd hand 5 months ago?

I bought the car 5 months ago 2nd hand and it will be 3 years old this September. Thank you

Thanks. Problem seemed to fix it self. Left it for about 5 hours and switched on the engine and it is now working. Will still take it in just in case.

I have had this light coming on and going off for the past five years! My dealer told me it was due to 'riding the clutch' - as I do not 'ride' the clutch, I have decided it is due to USING the clutch when parking in tiny spaces and moving very slowly.

I am now selling my beloved 2010 Fiat 500c...and this issue has just stopped me from making a sale!

The buyer came along and the lights were on...had not turned themselves off, as they have been doing for 5 blinking years...so they buyer decided that I must be a liar and that something was seriously malfunctioning with the engine.

Great.

Let's pay more money to advertise the car...

Anyone used the bug fix:

(Turn on the ignition and start the car - warning lights on etc
Turn off ignition
Turn ignition back on but DONT start engine, then turn off the StopStart with the switch on the dash
Start the engine and 'hey presto' no warning lights
With the engine still running, switch the StopStart back on and I've not had a problem since)

...with success?

I'm going to try it tomorrow...!

(if it has not turned itself off...)

Mine has just done this after driving back from the body shop. It felt like there was also a lack of power. I thought it was probably the battery as the car has been standing in a muddy lane since last October until 3 weeks ago. I am going to try that reset but am also going to bench charge the battery overnight. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Remember the battery is only there to start the car, once running the alternator provides almost all the power, in fact it's possible to remove the battery once running and it will keep working BUT DON'T TRY IT!! The state or charge can influence some components like the electric power steering or abs pump function but is unlikely to compromise the general running of the engine a code scanner will show what's tripping on the EML light?
