Excuse me... why do i struggle to get reverse .. i have to do it twice just not to get the horrible sound (As if im not pressing the clutch hard?!)

the car is brand new few months old with 15.000 on the clock?

Is it fiat again? or wut? :bang:

Try doing it slowly, let the engine revs die down first before engaging reverse. There is not synchromesh on reverse gear so its much more sensitive to the engine revs than the forward gears.

Okiee i will.... So thats normal?

Yup, it's normal on most cars (That I know of), if you really want to avoid it crunching then select 1st as normal, then move to reverse immediately with the clutch still pressed in. It should glide in smoothly.(y)

Wot he said. I do this out of habit now when I drive :)

is it possible to damage if it gets crunched too much? it made an awful sound today when i really needed to put in reverse very quickly.

You can damage almost anything if you abuse it sufficiently. Chipped teeth on the gears & bent selector forks are the obvious possibilities here.

Remember once having a broken gear tooth wedge between the crownwheel & the housing, breaking the housing, dumping all the lubricant and writing off a gearbox & diff - not on a 500, though.

If it's getting worse it can be a warning that the clutch is dragging, perhaps due to the slave cylinder starting to fail.

Edit: just noticed you live in Turkey, so presumably yours is LHD, in which case it will have a cable clutch.

thanks a lot. i dont think it has something to do with cluth though, it does that all the time when switching to rear even the car is moving just a little. most of the time i avoid crunching but i can't always pay attention to that in real life stiuations. however i can't really tell that it's getting worse, i dont remember if it ever sliped easly into reverse :) i presume it'd be much more noticable if a teeth broke due to the last incident. yes my car LHD btw..

Durukan, please don't worry as I think it's most unlikely you've done any serious damage.

It's a good idea not to engage reverse when the car is still moving. Stop the car and let the revs reduce to idle first. A little care and patience will help prolong the life of your car.
