Best car in snow out of 30+ cars i've had in 44 years of driving. Sure footed and serenely passed other cars stranded at the side.

Mine's diesel and I find that not using the accelerator when pulling away works brilliantly - the auto idle feature is perfect for this but you have to know how to apply it for best results. Same into 2nd once moving - no accelerator required.

Dunlop SP Sport on wide wheels.

100% agree!

up until today has been excellent and I actually managed to make it to the end of the road after a bit of snow levelling (car is lowered -60mm so became a snow plough)
the road after that was even deeper though and still falling so gave up and working from home instead

might try again later as i have a colleage down from Scotland in a nearby Hotel

who says Winter tyres are un-necessary now

306

these pics were the road when i got back- outside my house-

they were unused when i left oxford at 9am this morning....so definately not easy to drive on.

obviously experience is subjective, but i felt very safe and secure...

and maybe i do have 185s?....all i know is i kept moving!....

im not scared of driving in the conditions tho, and have done many times in other cars- i think if i was inexperienced and made sudden manouvers it could be very different....

Trust me, this was my road last night and it only got worse during the evening when it froze. Your 500 wouldn't have been so surefooted up there that's for sure.

Countless cars have been getting stuck around our house and I'm sure those people probably thought their cars were surefooted too

No slush there at all, just pure compacted ice :)

I'm currently carless at the moment as my mother has totally pinched my 500 to use instead of her Merc because it is so utterly useless in the snow in order to get to work. Have to say that I am proud..but then again I would like my car back  xxx

RWD is completely useless in the snow.

LMAO!

faux roaders not quite what they are cracked up to be!

It's all down to tyres really. I saw a couple of 4wds last night struggling and then I saw a Defender obviously on proper tyres which was shooting snow and slush out the side of its tyres at an alarming rate.

The only things that are going to affect how a car works in the snow are the following

Tyres - 500 scores badly here because other than in Pop form they're too wide and they're all fitted with summer tyres as standard
Good diff - 500 diff is completely open so that's another negative
FWD or 4wd - 500 does OK here because it's FWD
Good weight distribution - 500 does OK here because it's quite light at the back and most of the weight is over the drive wheels

But overall the 500 isn't really going to be all that better or worse than anything else. If you added a proper diff like jnoiles and/or some decent tyres like RobW you'd have something very surefooted.

I agree Rob - no matter what the car, once the snow depth is above the front spoiler you've little chance of progressing further. Apart from getting the shovel out every few metres - no fun on a long jouney (n)

I'm convinced that the tyres are playing the biggest part in the disparity here for us.
Contis don't seem so good in the icy stuff.
I must admit though, that on a slope, the way the throttle responds on the 1.2 doesn't help much. It doesn't do much at all below 1500 rpm and when you want to keep the revs low, its tricky trying to accelerate slowly in 2nd.
(Long second gear for a 1.2)

i suppose i could get the C spanners out and raise the suspension :ROFLMAO:

seriously it is now snowing heavily again so looks like i'm stuck here 'till at least friday

Get yourself a Subaru :D Wifes car might be appearing in EVO soonish as they're doing a feature on the Subaru Legacy RS/Turbo and the Mitsubishi VR4 and need a car as close to standard to drive and take a few photos of :D

nice one

nah don't like Scoobies but nearly bought an Evo6 Makinen last year
Nice :)

Know what's weird? I don't really like Subaru's myself but you can't argue with the performance and all weather capability. Ditto for Mitsubishi's. I'd much rather have an Integrale but I would never want to take it on the road.

Couple of sandbags in the boot up front. I've had a few rear engined motors , great fun in the snow. Get the tail out and flick it round corners. On quiet roads of course.

Yep agreed....same with rwd vans tooooooooooooo..:D

I took mine out once in past few weeks - and it was ok. Just ok. Wheels spun a fair bit. I was slightly disappointed.

I had been driving the 4x4 over past few weeks and there is absolutely no contest .. the 4x4 is far far better.
