My car has developed an annoying sound when cold. it sounds a little like a whistle and is coming from the engine compartment. Not sure what is causing it but it does this the in first 10 minutes or so when cold. It's not loud or anything, in fact i must have the window open in order to hear it. Any ideas what the problem is?

Mine too - it's got a bit worse recently. I think it's the alternator, but it is going in to be sorted this weekend. It was in for a service last weekend, but it wasn't there long enough to cool down enough to do it, so I'm dropping it in Friday night...

I forgot to say that i took it to the dealer the other day for oil refilling and i told them about it but they didn't find something wrong.
Orangesport can you please let us know what happens?

I too have something like this- sounds like a quiet and low pitched fan belt squeal (which I assumed it was). Sounds like a dealer trip (the first in ~3000 miles) once I can confirm the front suspension clonk that seems to be appearing

I'm at almost 2 years ownership now and mine has always done this. It gets worse when it gets cold. It's harmless.

Bugs the bejesus out of me though (y)

Get an induction kit fitted.

The whoosy induction noise covers it. And sounds brilliant at full revs. Working for me. :D

doesn't that spoil the warranty? also, it may break down the air mass flow sensor.

Well, if I sucked water or something into the engine yes, they'd probably reject it as a warranty job. The factory sensors still fit in to the kit. And as I said yesterday somewhere, she's had a remap, lighter alloys, better tyres, upgraded brake pads, better discs, 5.1 fluid, lowered springs, uprated clutch and quaife LSD fitted. The induction kit is probably not the bit that's going to push it over the edge :)

And it sounds glorious.

yes, on the other hand it's the best way to get a nice sound from the engine without modifying the exhaust. can you tell us more about the remap? did you notice any improvements at performance or fuel economy? are you happy with it?

Below is a dyno run showing before and after. I've got the 1.4. This was done when she was quite new so it's probably loosened up a bit since then. I've been meaning to pop her on the rollers again and see what the difference is now. But the response is sharper, she's quicker off the line and gives you a kick a bit lower. The overal figures don't change a lot in terms of increase it more where and how the power is delivered that makes an appreciable difference. You get a few more mpg if you drive sensibly but of course you don't, you thrash it around to hear the whooshy induction roar :)

i have to say, it's a very good engine. torque distribution is amazing. remap seems to be very successful since you got 7 more torques and 6 more hp from 1400 cc but personally i wouldn't bother to have a remap to a non turbo engine. if i need it to be sharper, i just push the sport button.

Took mine in today, for a few things. Whine/whistle was diagnosed as either alternator belt tension idler bearing, or the same for the timing belt. Both parts on order, going in this Wednesday for further investigation and repair.

Tip-top service from Pewsham, BTW.(y)

Edit: So essentially the same as OrangeSport then....

Update: Picked up tonight, whining/whistling apparently fixed. Was the belt tensioner. Picked up a new rattle, but hoping that was just the locking nuts box again.
