Firstly sorry for the invasion, once you've answered this for my dad I will vamoosh back to the punto section......:p

So he has had his 500 1.3 Lounge just under a year now and has had endless fun and no problems as of yet, however the gremlins have started appearing.

When he takes the car to work he only takes the basic key, not the remote one, and last week the car stopped locking. Turning the key in the hole would cause the door handle (inside) to slightly turn inwards but wouldn't lock fully.

However when he got home he pressed the door lock button on the remote key, both doors locked, he then went and opened it with the key manually and again afterwards it wouldn't lock without the remote.

So for a few days he started taking the remote key to work and using that but now that has stopped working too. The remote still works as the indicators flash but the door locks don't engage.

Naturally its going back to the garage under warranty, just wondered if any of you guys have had a similar experience or any ideas what the problem might be or what might have casued it?

Just take it into the dealer, it's under warranty and they're the best equipped people to sort it out :)

Don't run back to Punto land just yet. I assume you want to read the replies.
Yeah I was j/k.

He phoned the dealer today and its going in but there is a slight problem. He brought the car from Brindley Fiat, who have now closed down, so phoned Guest Fiat who said becasue the car wasn't brought from them, they couldn't give him a courtsey car. Right pain in the arse.

I can kind of understand where they're coming from but that's still a little nasty. Perhaps give Fiat a call?

that's a bit short sighted of them!! If I was him I wouldn't buy from them in the future either!

we had a similar issue with our multi years ago - we bought it from Ireland and the local dealer wouldn't service it as we hadn't bought from them! Fair enough he was pained as we imported, but we weren't asking for anything free. Consequently we went to a dealer 20 miles away and that is where we bought our 500 from 10 years later!

Hi
I had drivers lock completely fail as it would remotely 'lock' but not actually (you could open it from outside). Had it fixed under warranty (new lock and handle fitted) by local Fiat dealer. It was done in about an hour so no courtesy car needed, but I had service done by them too and had a courtesy car for ten pounds insurance fee (as I haven't bought the car from them either). Hope this helps

Having similar problems myself.
The door tries to lock when the remote is pressed but I have noticed that the handle on the inside (on the drivers side) doesn't go all the way in to the position that it should when it is fully locked. So the door tries to lock and then unlocks immediately.
This only seems to happen when the weather is freezing. (which it has been lately)
A few good backward and forward wiggles on the handle and it works.(so far anyway)
I feel a trip to the dealer is required myself.
I hate intermittent faults. They never seem to occur when you show the dealer:bang:

Hi 1967stu, had exactly the same fault. Inside handle would not go all the way in so sometimes had to be pushed in manually. When I forgot to push it in it wouldn't lock. Went to dealers, explained and showed the problem, they had a look and said that the new door handle has to be ordered. A week later went back and had it fitted under warranty in about an hours. Hope this helps.
