All,

Picked up my 500 today. Very, very happy except for a slight concern I have re. the gearbox. It seems very whiney in reverse, and to an extent in the forwards gears. I'm not sure whether this is due to;

1. Newness

2. Me being used to the family merc

3. A problem of some description.

Has anyone else found this, and does it get better?

Testdrive another car and see if it whines as much :) Personally I wouldn't say I can hear any whine with my car but then again I'm moving from a car which was whine city so it's all relative.

They've accidentally given you one with straight cut gears! ;)
I can't say I noticed a whine on mine when I first got it, but compared to a Merc it will probably sound a bit louder!

I have a punto and i bought recently a panda and i've already oppened a topic about this because i ear all that happens when i press the clutch and the gear changes like if i was inside the bonnet :) I do´'t listen to that in my 8v mk2 punto probably because of its better insonorization and the hydraulic clutch (i believe its mechanical in panda). Sometimes i feel a lit bit of resistance changing to 3rd but its a matter of habbit because the car is only 2000miles...

Well, been out in it today and I can only hear a whine/light grating in reverse. Guess it was me being paranoid :/

Still can't work out how to open the glove box hidden compartment though. *Searches*

It opens from the front of the top of the glovebox shelf. You have to pinch the bit of plastic that sticks out from the 'roof' of the shelf.

The back and the front bits. I think. It's not exactly the biggest compartment in the world though, you can, at best, store the booklet in there.

The clutch in the 500 is also hydraulic :)

Well the 306 has cable operated clutch which means that when yoy press on the clutch pedal it pulls a cable which then operated the clutch. Incidently on the 306 the clutch cable runs close to the exhaust so it's quite common for the lubricant in the cable to dry out which makes the clutch cable stick quite a bit.

Basically the 500's clutch works like the brake system on most cars and you 306's clutch works more like the traditional cable operated brakes on a bike.
