Has anyone experienced unexplained shattering of the rear window?

Closed the passenger door today on my 59 plate 500 and the rear screen shattered without explanation. Could it have been incorrectly fitted / manufactured so that the pressure of the door closing 'popped' the screen?

Plan to speak to my dealer tomorrow, but would appreciate details of any similar experiences.... the car has 20 miles on the clock!!!!

sounds like a stress fault in manufacture

OMG!.....on mine when you close the doors you can see the tailgate move in its frame- must be a lot of pressure in there!

Happened to a mate of mine's MG ZR last year also for no apparent reason after 7 years of ownership.

Thanks folks - I will speak with the dealership and see what they say.

Will let you know the outcome.

Had it happen in the first of the previous Cinquecentos I owned. That happened when I pressed the "heated rear window" switch. Many years later discovered it was a common early fault on the model.

Was very shocked to read of your problem. Really hope your not too upset although I can imagine you are (I would be!)
Hope it gets sorted in double quick time and that you don't develop a nervous twitch that it might happen again as I'm sure it won't x

Toughened glass is a funny thing. We once had the front on a 20 year old oven just fall out of the door for no apparent reason while the over was on and had only been on for a short while.

It won't happen again and I'd be surprised if it happens to anyone else on this forum ever has this issue. Could happen to anyone, might be hard to get the dealer to replace it though......

Tbf this sort of random thing has been happening on cars for years happened on my dads megane it was sat outside in the middle of the night and the back window popped at random without any outside or inside intervention.

you weren't by any chance cooking oven chips were you?
It was at least 10-12 years ago now :p I will however ask my mum when I call her next :p

Random bloody Scottish people! :p Next you'll be asking if I was doing a polka while wearing a purple pair of lederhosen!!!!!!

Hi

You are not alone! Mine shattered today after the car was sat on the drive and had not been touched or driven since Saturday (its now Monday evening!).

I contacted Fiat after I made sure nothing external had caused the damage ie a brick, and they have come back finally stating that it has never happened before so thay are not prepared to cover it under the manufractuers warantee! I am having to get it repaired through my insurers, so I am not happy at all!

My 500 is 8 months old, done just over 5300 miles with no problems, then this morning the rear window shattered into a milion bits for no reason whatsoever!

I am not to happy with Fiat at the moment as clearly there is at least another one that has had this problem. Is there anyone else out there that has had this problem? I need to know so that I can argue my case with Fiat to get my access back!

Are you sure nothing hit it? Were you actually there when it broke? Not calling you a liar or anything but the OP had it happen when they closed the hatch. It could be possible that someone vandalised the car? Of course it could be very possible that it just broke, just very strange if that's the case.

I had a Saxo VTR back in the day and I remember this coming up with them. I think it was due to the rear wiper being over tightened and/or a gasket being omitted. I'm pretty sure there was a recall on them, hard to remember now as there were MANY recalls on them!
