Hi

My oild light quickly flashed on on the drive to work this morning. Hopefully, it was just because of the cold weather.

Can anyone tell me what the recommended oil is for the 500 1.3 Multijet is? I have left my service book at home. Cheers.

why use anything other that what Fiat recommend?

Why use what they recomend if out of warranty? Fiat own Selenia thats why they recomend it! Its harder to get than other similar or better oils, and expensive too, not getting into the old oil debate again.....

I had Shell Helix put in mine, all OK so far at 42,000 miles, runs like a dream and gives excellent economy. As long as its fully synthetic and the right grade all is OK. (sorry I dont have the data for the 1.3 MJet)

If its under warranty thats different. Use Selenia to save any awkward responses from Fiat in the unlikely event of an engine failure.

dunno but i'm intending to switch to mobil-1 at 7000 miles. the factory stuff is horribly black already.

Diesels make their lube black in very short times... it means nothing.

because that is what the engine was developed and durability tested on

:( this is the old oil debate...

So what if that is what they developed the engine on? The fact Fiat own Selenia has far more to do with it, there is no magic in Selenia oil.

Although I just KNOW this will spark off the debate that has been done to death on here before....

not starting a debate, just stating a fact

The OP will have his info by now anyway so might as well lock the thread...

Its only stating your opinion as fact, backed by Fiat of course but then they would say that wouldnt they. I dont see Ferrari F1 cars (Ferrari are an offshoot of Fiat) with Selenia advertising on... Shell IIRC?

And the Mods will lock the Thread at their discretion.

I'm done now anyhow....

Come on Rob, there are lots of people that reckon Mobil 1 is exceptional oil eg. McLaren. Even the Ferrari F1 team use Shell lubricants. Don't forget this same argument can be raised against any change from the standard car and you will be the first to agree that your suspension kit and other parts aren't the ones that the car was developed on. :)

I'm also unsure about the oil to use.

I agree with comments about there being various good oils and running the mj on mobile 1 etc as long as it's the correct grade but.........

......as the 500 has a DPF and these can be damaged easily there has been a number of new standards set up for diesel engines specifically with DPF technology.

The reason I'm even getting involved in this thread is simply to highlight something I found out with another diesel vehicle I had when I needed to top up it's oil.

In my 'other car' the handbook stated I had to use oil with ACEA C3 or C4 rating (not 100% which). When I went out to find oil, loads had ACEA A and B ratings but not C, the requirement of C being tied to DPF type systems on the car.

The garage wasn't even sure and it turned out they couldn't even supply the oil to me in small 'top up' amounts as they had none. Eventually they did get the correct stuff. Even my local Renault garage whom I'm very friendly with didn't know anything about the ACEA C rating stuff.

This info gives some info on the standards http://www.acea.be/images/uploads/pub/070308_ACEA_sequences_2007_LD_and_HD.pdf

Please note, I'm not trying to be a know it all and I'm sure someone on here will tell me I'm talking rubbish.

I looked in the 500 book and asked the dealer the day I collected mine for some top up oil and they said they'd just use the normal oil they use for all diesels (it's a Saab, Citroen, fiat dealer) which didn't impress me and as of yet I'm still unsure which northwest dealer to go to for aftermarket service.

Mine 500 is now at 5500 miles and ideally I'll have an oil change at 9000 if I find a good dealer and know they'll be using the correct oil.

Looking at Mobile 1 specs http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English/LCW/Products_Services/Mobil_1_ESP.asp they specifically mention the DPF and EURO IV specs.

good post

I am sure everyone has good intentions, but there are plenty dealers who dont use Selenia, and unless you ask for irrefutable proof how would anyone know what they had used?

As I said before, as long as a comparable (comparable in all respects) lubricant is used it will be fine.

should state on invoice

Autotrend in Bristol (RIP) used Castrol Magnetec on mine one and I demanded and recieved an oil change for correct Selenia.

And thats good for you Rob, but anyone could write anything on an invoice. This is why I was reluctant to enter into the Oil debate again its endless.

Just curious as to why Ferrari advertise (and use) Shell in their F1 cars....

I'm happy with Shell Helix diesel synthetic.

In a warranty period I would choose that recommended by the manufacturer given a choice. I have in the passed had the oil specified on the service book but as I used a Saab main dealer I didnt worry.
Fiat tend to have franchised dealers who look after more than one manufacturer or at least Nottingham does.
I am a little concerned that a one size fits all policy will apply.

.

This sort of response given to philboo just fills me with dread its not what I want to hear and certanly think Fiat wouldnt be happy.

Whether the oil used is better or worse isnt in my mind the issue - its the preservation of the warranty. This is particularly important now Fiat are offering 5 years warranties on the GP and the Ceed has a whopping 7 !!

WTF has Ferrari got to do with Diesel Fiat 500s...

Nothing... but Ferrari are a Fiat offshoot running highly stressed engines in F1 and they choose Shell lol! If Selenia was so magical why not use that but specifically for F1 fuel?

Diesel is diesel, as long as an oil spec suits the needs as per Selenia (DPF etc)why just use Selenia, except where as Posted above by Jake in Notts (and my previous acknowledgement) where Warranty is involved?

Time to dismount from your High horse Rob FFS!

The OP asked which oil to use - his car is in warranty, therefore you have answered your own question. Glad you agree with yourself.

I agree that Shell Helix is a very good oil and have some waiting to go into my Cinq Sportings.
