Take the spikes out, they only locate the disc until the wheel bolts are fitted, and make it a wee bit easier when fitting a wheel on in the dark.

Cheers

PD

Ok, I will try that.(y) Hope the disc doesn´t come off before I get the wheel in place then...

Pirelli, Pirelli or Pirelli, summer and winter tyres, nothing else for me and my cars....!!

www.pirelli.co.uk

On very rare occasions, when Pirelli doesn't have the size I want, I use Marangoni (summer)tyres.
Marangoni tyres are used by several German car tuners for their very fast, tuned cars, (remember: no speedlimmits on most German Autobahn.... so very demanding for tyres..!!)
www.marangoni.it

A very good, inexpensive source for tyres: www.mytyres.co.uk

It will be fine as PD says, I have had them off mine to try different wheels, no problem at all.

Thank you for this information. Wasn´t sure so thought it was better to ask, and as always a quick answer from here! I just need to get my 10mm wrench out and remove them then.

Winter Tyres???. what utter bull s**t. If the tyres your car was supplied with were not safe at lower temps, all the tyre companiies would be in court.
Sometimes we do get a heavy snow fall up here, and thats when you find out who can drive in the white stuff and who cant.

Cheers Ian.

yes but not everybody has the tyres that came with the car do they? some have gone for an upgrade, which arnt the best thing to use in the winter. since you come from near me, you will know there is many back roads and patches of bypass where gritters didnt get to.

Over here it´s not a question of choise, winter tyres are obligatory by law during winter months. So it´s either studded tyres or friction tyres from 1.12.-28.2.

I was a bit nonplussed by this thread at first as Ive never changed my tyres for winter ones but a lot of the posters are in other european countries where it is either the law or warranted because of the weather! They are quite within their rights to discuss it! The web is global!

So it never gets colder than 7 degrees C in Worksop, then.

Cheers

Actually, we have the most balmy winters as we are in a unique geographical situation which precludes the extremes of weather. the last time it snowed it made the front page of the newspaper and the local infrastucture was so affected several areas had lengthy powercuts. At the moment I am wearing sunblock just in case and sporting a jaunty pair of culottes which are both stylish and practical :p

i use YOKOHAMA GUARDEX K2 F700 Winter Tyres SPEC 195/55/R15 84Q

i no i'm not a 500 owner but i've spent the last few winters in the alps and have driven with both summer & winter tyers
And can happily say your stupid not to use winter tyres even in england, not so much for driving in town but how many dark country roads do you drive that are covered in mud not gritted when its cold and very dark at night the winter tyres improve the grip so much.

yes you could say learn to drive better, but what happens when you go round a corner and the is a crash infront of you, i no i'll be stopping but what about you,
its also so much fun when it does snow as you tend to be the only one getting anywhere

i paid £60 each for the tyres and have put them on an old set of alloys i had

this is this sets second year, so doesn't cost alot,

worth a look if you love you 500

I think this is becoming a bit of a saga now and I really dont know why I have to reply as Im not massively bothered, but this must mean that 99% of the driving population of england (I cant back this up with figures) must be stupid, as I have never met anyone nor do I live near anyone who has ever changed their tyres in Winter! If it were such a big issue Im sure Watchdog or tonight with Trevor Mcdonut or something would have done an item on it. The only time in my 20 plus years of driving that I have "lost it" in ice or snow was in a Local authority minibus on a country road full of youth club kids. I used my driving skill to come out of the skid with no accident and happily stunned them all into silence!

Im more concerned about people who drive up your a**s on motorways in driving rain or fog, those who pull into your safety space on motorways effectively forcing you to tailgate them, dont put their lights on on the motorway at night (as 2 people did last night on the M1) or zoom across 3 lanes to get off at their exit because theyve left it too late.

anyhoo this sounds like a rant which it really isnt! suppose the point im making is, i respect other peoples right to change whatever they want on their cars, but I dont want it to be implied that Im stupid because I dont do something that has never been an issue for me or anyone I know.

Respect to the tyre changers of the world!:D

Lucky are those who can find a cheap set of steel wheels which will fit over their calipers

Best you can do otherwise is make sure you've plenty of tread left on the tyres over winter, and hope the movement in the tread heats the tyres up to a safe operating temp.

Also not willing to rant, although as I live in Wales, I suppose technically I cant be offended by luckyegg's comment ;o)

However, I do agree with nottsfiat07. In the 10 years that i've been driving, i've only once come a cropper with the 'wrong' tyres, and that was in a freak snowfall.

Im not being ignorant to the benefits of winter tyres, I just dont see them as being necessary in the part of the country that I live in. Besides that, where am I supposed to store winter wheels for the rest of the year?

Well, I'm driving with mine winter tyres
Continental Wintercontact ts790 195/45 r-16 for a week now.
They preform very good on dry and wet surface, and the ride is
more comfy with them........so for now...i'm very 'appy!
