Sorry for such a basic question, will find the answer on here quicker than thumbing through the manual.

Found that the light stick gives you one option - ON or OFF!

How do the sidelights come on without the main headlights?

Also impressed that the lights go off automatically when you take the key out of ignition. Assume then you can leave the ON position all the time?

Thanks in advance! (y)

Only when the ignition is switched off. You cannot drive on sidelights.

The problem here is that if you drive to work in the dark and then turn off the ignition without turning the lights off you (substitute you for my wife, in this scenario, sounds like lyrics from a song) then drive home in bright sunshine with headlights on.

Obviously you would notice the warning light being on in the speedo housing and not make this mistake :)

Well this is bonkers then, cus I watched the Top GEar feature on You Tube with the BMX bikes, and the 500 James May was driving, only had the sidelights on! unless that because it was a european spec car?

My old Mini Cooper could drive with just sides on, as can my TT. Almost standard to be able to do that surely or am I not getting this!

THESE ONES! :) as shown on the pic below the main headlights.

Hey Red,

They are the DRL's (daylight running lights) they are on all the time unless you turn them off via the menu system. :)

Think you are not getting this - sorry. I may be wrong, but I think the others are saying you can leave it on head lights and they turn off as you remove the ignition.

As mine has not arrived yet can I ask is there separate side lights and DRL's or are side lights not needed now that cars will all start to have DRL's as standard?

right then, the 500 doesn't have side lights. it has what are called drl's to turn these on press the menu button on the clock binacle and scroll through untill you see drl or it may say daylights can't remember ! then just turn them on but take note the drls are FRONT only will be on whenever the key is turned and there will be no rear illumination also the clocks don't seem to light up either the others are correct the main headlamps can be leaft on all the time and will turn on&off with the ignition key hope this clears it up for ya :)

The problem is that to get rear lights, you need to use the headlight and the DRLs are front only.

So in a scenario where you need to pull over and wait for a gap in traffic before reversing onto your drive (it is a breach of the highway code to reverse back on to a road), you must keep your headlights on and therefore almost certainly dazzel oncoming traffic when performing the manouver.

Another scenario is if broken down on a motorway at night. You'd need to either idle the engine for 30 mins or have a flat battery as well by the time the AA come (to change your tyre or whatever).

Definitely not ideal IMHO.

White. the 500 does have sidelights. If you switch off your engine and remove keys from ignition then turn on the lights on the stalk you will find that front and rear sidelights are now on. I guess it's so that you can park in a dark place (not a dogging area) and be able to leave the lights on.

Day Lights they are called! :)
Nice one white 500. Just switched them on via the menu.

I think it looks better with them on, plus adds that little more presence for other road users!

well yeah but you can't drive with them like that though so i'd say they were more porking oops i mean parking lights

Scenario 1 - use dipped
Scenario 2 - hazards
?

but as you turn so the lights are pointing towards oncoming traffic, on dipped, because they are angled up on the kerb side they will dazzle oncoming traffic.
