Angry Tyres!!!

Just been to Dorchester Market today and when I got back to the Park & Ride to drive home I noticed a nail in the NSR tyre, about 1" in from the edge. Gave it a slight pull hoping it would hadn't penetrated the casing but the hiss of air confimed my worst suspicion. Quickly pushed it back in and headed for the nearest tyre dealer.

He thought it could be repaired but wasn't able to do it for a couple of hours so I thought I try somewhere else closer to home. In Poole tried a couple and they said I needed a new tyre as it couldn't be repaired, too close to edge. Asked when they could get a new tyre for, but after much ringing around apparently no one stocks 195/45/R16 84V Bridgestone Potenza REO50A tyres locally.

Have had to settle for ordering one and have bought a can of blow up and seal goo just in case, although there is the skinny tyre option if worst comes to worst.

Prices varied but have arranged for tyre to be fitted + valve + balance for £75.00 inclusive, the highest price was £95.00 all in.

Why do I always get a puncture in new tyres, never when the tyre is due to be replaced???

Re: Tyres!!!

They are very pricey, but £75 all in isnt too bad at all.

NP, Better than my Accord, they are always over £120 each. Wish I'd gone to New Milton market today instead, it would have been a cheaper day out.

Re: Tyres!!!

Ouch, I understand your pain!

I experienced exactly the same thing when I had my brand new 206cc. That also had 16" wheels, and it was less than a month after I got it that I found a screw in one of my back tyres, also on the edge. Cost me about £90 for a replacement

Re: Tyres!!!

looking at those prices, I'm glad I got the standard steels and not the 15" alloys I was going to have...

Re: Tyres!!!

Grim,

Hope you get one sourced and fitted, Bridgestone are a nightmare when it comes to supply of sizes outside of the norm. I had a puncture in a BMW run-flat (ironic). BMW took it in then said they were on 6 weeks back order and refused to release my car. As you can imagine, a quick mail to the MD of BMW sorted it in 2 days. All the dealers said they could get them and then found they couldn't.

Just remember this should always be used on the rear axle, and not the front/steering/driving axle.

What tyre is it?

Jon.

Re: Tyres!!!

Damn! I just had a tyre go this morning after reading this thread last night and thinking "that sucks". Someone stood a bunch of screws up at the end of my street. I swerved and collected one in the middle of the tyre. Crap. The girlfriend is working from home today and took the car around the kwik-fit, they had a tyre in stock. I'll update the price as soon she calls back.

Re: Tyres!!!

If it was in the middle of the tyre, you should just be able to have it repaired surely?

Jon, it is the NSR. Does this count as good luck?

ps. What would you do if it was a front tyre? Personally I'd put it on and just be careful.

Jack up car, put spare wheel on rear axle. Take good tyre off rear and move to front of car. Jack up front and swap the full size ones. Put punctured one in the boot.

Re: Tyres!!!

Nope, can't be repaired. It tore a big hold in the middle. £105 for a new tyre fitted. *sigh*

And sadly, this has been the high point of my day.

I want wine.

Re: Tyres!!!

Dave, thanks for the link. I see they list a 195/65/16 Bridgestone Potenza REO50A at £61.20, (with fitting etc. works out at £75.20) the only difference is the load rating at 80 instead of 84 on my current tyre. I don't know how significant that is as I have been out of the motor trade for 18 years now and I know a lot of changes have been made as to what is acceptable on an MOT.

Anyway, I bought mine online from National Tyres at £75 all in. They deliver it to your nearest National Tyre centre, allow you to choose your date and time for fitting and it is much cheaper than just calling in to the branch.

Well worth checking out if you are looking for tyres.
