I picked up my 500 two weeks ago and since then the mileage counter has been flashing occasionally. I took it to the dealer yesterday but they phoned today and said it hasn't flashed whilst they've had it and so won't try and fix it as it wouldn't be covered under warranty. Is this right?

My 500 also had some other niggles such as a loud pump sound coming from the passenger foot well when breaking, the main wiper blade leaving smears and a rattle coming from in the steering column when going over rough ground. All of which have been dismissed as either not being problems or they can't find faults!

None of the these are major but I'm a bit stuck really!

Phone customer services, the flashing mileage is easily fixed but I suspect your hearing the linkage on passenger side when braking.

New wiper blade & check around steering column will cure your other problems.

Ask to speak to DET at garage & deal only with him who will in turn liason with technical & customer services.

I've had the flashing mileage (fixed with proxy alignment at the dealer) although it has done it again since:( I also get the pumping sound when braking in the passenger footwell - I thought this was normal though:confused:

As you know I am a reluctant contributor !!! Regardless of whether you speak to the DET solving the flashing odometer problem is a headache !!! Basically the car is saying I have something wrong with me but I dont know what it is !!!! there is no easy fix for the flashing mileage reading its just trial and error !!! its really tough to sort but is not a major problem so chill out over it !!!

I suggest you try another dealer if there is another one near you and I would phone Fiat and give them a piece of your mind.
Regardless whether its tough to fix or not it shouldn't be doing the flashing and the dealer should try to fix.

Maybe it isn't major but as you yourself admit it is a problem and I for one do not expect to purchase a new car and have problems with it and I certainly wouldn't accept a garage telling me they ain't gonna fix it. They either fix it or give you your money back.

well I dont want to get in an arguement over it...its easy to come on here and moan about the fiat dealer whos not fixed it but when I know how many hours have gone into trying to fix this problem maybe you would understand....it really is causing us a problem so if it really is that much of a problem maybe you should allow us to take the car back. there really is no easy fix despite what you think as the car has a problem and cannot identify it from the warnig lights.

The car has a fault & the customer is quite right to request it is repaired,it is after all not the customers fault.

Wether it takes a day,a week or a month to fix it still requires sorting. As to who pays for the techs time is up to the dealership & fiat to sort out between them afterwards, certainly not the customer.

Im astounded by the reply from Mr. Butcher... as T has said the car has an issue and it needs resolving no matter how long it takes.
The pump noise from the brakes is perfectly normal on a 500, never heard it on any other Fiat though. As for the windscreen wiper it may just need cleaning. Rattles are the worst things to find and repair, it really can be mindblowing tracing them.

Mine's going in again for the 2nd time to try and fix the fuel gauge problem! never have they said ' no' . Ring customer services,( I've had other probs as well, to do with the car , not the Dealer ) they have been great, very apologetic and 1st class service, made me feel happy about Bibi again:)

Re flashing mileage... My 500 had flashing mileage, took it to dealers who had proxy alingment done and happy as a bunny until... IT FLASHED AGAIN TODAY! Not quite sure what to do.... Every trip to the dealer is with a small child in tow and takes forever to sort out by which time we are all frazzled and tired... Any more ideas anyone?

Oh god why do I always cause trouble !!! i so don't mean to !!!! The problem that people are having is a widely known problem ...my own 500 odometer is currently flashing and noone is saying it shouldnt be fixed but nobody has been able to fix it for two years including Fiat technical. The examiner doesnt understand the flashing mileage reading and we have been tearing our hair out over it...the complaint on this thread is nothing to do with Alan Gibson Ltd but we have a problem with it like every dealer. We have a 5.6% retail market share in our area which is better than Toyota and Honda and a customer satisfaction score 8th out of 155 dealers but nobody knows why the 500 and Punto are doing this and yes maybe my comments are astounding but they are true. For people like me who care about their Fiat customers it is frustrating that we are tarred with the same brush as other Fiat sales staff especially when both me and the dealership come highly reccommended.......maybe you need to research your subject a bit better before slating us Mr New Panda !!!! just friend to friend advice !!!

I have a different perspective on this. My 500 has the flashing mileage thing intermittently. I've noticed it tends to happen if I start the car before the system is fully "booted" up. I've worked a lot with computer software systems and there's a lot going on when you power-up the ignition on this car (with the microsoft based stuff). If I wait until the fuel guage is fully working, (I think that's fully booted0 and then if I start the car I don't get the flashing mileage thing. If I jump in the car and don't wait a few seconds, it tends to flash. I don't consider my car has a problem - it works fine. I don't consider it's worth taking to a dealer for this. The car works and the dealers (with respect to you all) are not set up to deal with tracing what's going on with the cars "operating system". If the car's working fine, as mine is, I wouldn't worry about it.

we really do want to deal with the flashing odometers but the bottom line is that the odometer flashes when there is no available warning light for the problem ...we have some Grande Punto owners who have had this problem for two years ..its tough for a customer to understand that there is no quick fix ...astounding !!!! but true...please try to understand !!!

Chris, nobody is pointing the finger at you or Alan Gibson Ltd (and no offence but were not interested in the share of the market where you are,you have no need to justify anything to anybody) or criticising(sp?) in anyway and we are well aware you & the dealership are doing all you can but you cant deny the fact the car has a fault (the same as yours?) and the customer has a right to be annoyed which like it or not is what this is all about. In my opinion 'taking the car back' doesn't resolve the matter, what will resolve things is for everyone, and by that I mean the dealerships / techs / Fiat and the good people of this forum (who after all provide us with vital information on the fault) to help each another to get this sorted.

Right on a technical level, have you tried subsituting any parts (convergence unit for example) and checked all CAN wiring? Something is knocking out the CAN system and in the past I have had EPS,plugs & starters causing similar symptoms. Other than this then are looking at a software issue?

Give us some idea what you have tried so far and maybe some suggestions can get thrown in from owners here that might help.

I will ask our DET to post on here as he also keeps an eye on what you good people are saying and being a mere salesperson he is better qualified to answer....its good that we are all looking to resolve problems together as it is pointless moaning about each other. which it has been said has gone on before !!! You might not be interested in our local sales shares but maybe you should be as it proves that not all fiat dealers are bad.... I thought you might have congratulated us on it but you by self admission are not interested in our success. never mind
