Got a slight issue with the hill holder. I park noise down on a steep drive, both hand brake and ingear when stopped.

My first attempt with hill holder almost ended with me rolling though my front door !!

I started the car and put it in reverse grear foot on clutch and foot on brake. Released the brake expecting the car to stay where it was as I find the bite point but no it just rolls forward.

What did I go wrong is the question. I thought the holder uses a tilt switch and it shouldnt roll at all.

In that case the rest of the ESP might not be working properly either, but you wouldn't know about it until it was too late - I should have the system checked at your Fiat dealership.

If you've got ESP this warning lamp (1) lights-up when the ignition is first switched on (amber coloured).

It also comes on (and stays on) to signify an ESP or Hill Holder fault.

If the HH isn't operating, a common fault is an incorrectly adjusted clutch pedal switch (it would also cause issues with the EFI system too- normally a lack of power). If so, once confirmed on the Examiner diagnostic it's a 5 min job to adjust.

Ok check the lights and so its fitted.
Rang the dealer, a tech guy found some info that said
"the hill holder is not activated with the car in reverse"

I guess that will explain it then !

I will check out the manual to see if its different from the tech read off his info sheet.
Up till now I had assumed it worked on either a unward facing hill with 1st to stop u rolling back and a downward facing hill with reverse selcted to stop u rolling forward.

Although to be fair to the Dealer I didn't know it worked in reverse either until I read-up on it, and so far I've not had a chance to try it out.

I assume it looks for a signal from the Body Computer that reverse is engaged (ie reverse light is on) when pointing downhill, as there's no mention of extra switches for the ESP in the gearlever assembly. Is your reverse light working ok?

Well the ASR button is only for traction control. Not for ESP. But if you paid for ESP then it should have ESP of course.

WRONG.

ASR is Fiat's acronym for ESP. Please don't post info if you don't know the facts. It's unhelpful to all of us...

Er, well I can't really let that one pass on the Technical Forum -

ASR is not an acronym for ESP. ASR is Anti-Schlupf Regelung (or Anti Slip Regulator in English) and is part of ESP. It is the only part of ESP which can be turned off by the driver in the 500. The OP's point was, that if you had ASR you must also have ESP fitted.

Yup :)

ASR = Anti Slip Regulation which is Fiat's way of saying traction control.
ESP = senses a car going into understeer or oversteer and brakes individual wheels so as to keep the car under control.

Two quite different things :)

:yeahthat:

Indeed. Also another term floating about in the Fiat Group (mainly Alfa) is VDC.

It stands for Vehicle Dynamic Control, and is essentially ESP. From what I've been told, the only reason it is used is that Bosch own the rights to the term 'ESP' and Alfa Romeo didn't want to shell-out the money to be able to list it on the spec sheets.
